Feb. 6, 1935 — the demolition of the former Norfolk Landmark newspaper building, located on E. Main St. The office operated from 1870 to 1911, and on January 1, 1912, it was consolidated with the Virginian-Pilot. The Norfolk Waterside Marriott Hotel is located here today.

Shortly after his visit to Hampton Roads, Poe died in Baltimore on Oct. 7, 1849.
Today, in 1845, Edgar Allan Poe’s poem “The Raven,” published in the New York Evening Mirror.
Not so widely known was that the first Norfolk-area reading of "The Raven" by Poe took place on a veranda of the old Hygeia Hotel at Old Point Comfort in Hampton on a breezy, moonlit September evening a few days earlier.
