we call it الشرق الأوسط (the middle east) in arabic too, quite frankly we just don’t have strong enough ties with asia at large to identify with the term “west asia” 1/3

there isn’t a large local movement to stop calling it the middle east and there are many more important issues going on anyway, it’s just pedantic and as an iraqi arab/kurd a worse and less relatable alternative

besides religion nobody in iraq or yemen has any real cultural connection to india, china, vietnam or usbezkistan, but on the other hand syrians, turks, omanis and persians all share a tight cultural sphere with one another that doesn’t meaningfully link to the rest of asia 2/3
