Some thoughts on the criticism on the Eagles for paying an RB big money:
There is no question that as a general rule investing big resources into an RB is not the way to build a team. Other positions are more important.
But everything, especially in FA, is situational.
The Giants were dumb to take Saquon at No. 2. It was a bad use of a high resource. They were smart to not pay him now. They are not contenders and have basically nothing on offense.
But the #Eagles are contenders. They have a ton of space. They are smart at manipulating the cap. They are set with young talent on offense. Saquon comes in and can be an instant impact player for them on the more important side of the ball. They are set up to take on an elite RB. That’s why it’s a smart move.
If you have zero players on your roster you of course pick other positions over RB. Like DE, OT, QB etc.
But if you are a team like Eagles, 49ers, Chiefs, Lions, Bills, Ravens, etc., you pay what it takes to add an elite RB because you can make the most of that player.
