He was 36 years old and had won every single trophy recognized by UEFA and FIFA. One of only six players in the history of European football to complete that full set.

Today, 37 years ago, it all ended when he went scouting an opponent on a rainy Sunday in a village in Poland.

On the 3rd of September 1989, Gaetano Scirea died in a car crash near Babsk, Poland.

Born in Cernusco sul Naviglio in 1953, Scirea came through Atalanta's academy before Juventus signed him in 1974, at just 21. He stayed for fourteen years, made 550 appearances, scored 32 goals as a defender, and captained one of the greatest generations in Italian football history, alongside Dino Zoff, Marco Tardelli, Claudio Gentile, Antonio Cabrini, Michel Platini and Paolo Rossi.

During those years he won seven Scudetti, two Coppa Italias, the Cup Winners' Cup, the UEFA Cup, the European Cup, the UEFA Super Cup and the Intercontinental Cup, becoming one of very few players in European football history to have won all three major UEFA club competitions, and one of just six to hold every trophy the sport's governing bodies recognise.

For Italy, he won 72 caps across three World Cups, and lifted the trophy in 1982.

He retired from playing in 1988 and immediately became a scout at Juventus. A year later, on a Sunday in September, he was in Poland to watch Górnik Zabrze, Juventus's next UEFA Cup opponents.

Heavy rain led to a head-on collision with a truck near the village of Babsk. The car he was travelling in was carrying fuel in the trunk, which exploded on impact. Scirea and two others in the vehicle were killed instantly.

He left behind his wife, Mariella, and their son, Riccardo. News of his death broke live on Italian television that evening, a Sunday sports programme interrupted mid-broadcast to tell the country what had happened.

He is remembered as much for his character as his style of playing football. A classic sweeper, calm, understated, almost never booked across his career. The kind of defender opponents respected and feared at the same time. Italian football still gives out an annual fair-play award in his name.

Il #3settembre 1989 moriva #GaetanoScirea. Di lui si ricorda, oltre la bravura, il fair play. Uno dei giocatori più corretti (mai espulso) oltre che bravi, campione del Mondo nel 1982, 7 scudetti, una Champions, una Uefa e una Coppa Coppe. Morì in un assurdo incidente in Polonia.
