Unlike you, permit the genuine leaders to oversee foreign policy. The clan enclave you often mention possesses neither influence nor the authority to establish a stance in northern Somalia. Social media serves as a repository for their follies.
🇸🇴⚓️🇹🇷 Somali voices are getting louder calling for --top #defense & #investment partner-- Türkiye to establish a NAVAL BASE in the country, following a piracy incident on Friday where a #Mogadishu-bound cargo vessel carrying Turkish military aid was illegally seized by the #PMPF forces of breakaway #Puntland in violation of both international law and Somali federal statues; a blatant criminal act that puts the "warlord" in charge of the local militancy, Abdullahi #Dani, on the spot for political and military liability both inside and outside of Somalia.
Indeed, a joint Somali-Turkish military base conveniently located on the northern shores of the country, where the federalist SSC-Khaatumo State dominates, can help achieve many long-term strategic goals for the two brotherly nations:
✅ Areas like Las Qoray, Maydh, or Zeila are not just legally Somali; they are now politically accessible, militarily secured, and openly welcoming to federal presence.
✅ A naval base here would not be an act of aggression — it would be the natural consolidation of national sovereignty, in full accordance with Somalia’s constitution and with the backing of its citizens.
✅ The collapse of #Somaliland’s grip has created space for legitimacy to take root. Türkiye, as Somalia’s closest and most trusted #security partner, is best positioned to help make that legitimacy permanent.
✅ But this federal reassertion is deeply threatening to those who profit from Somalia’s fragmentation — particularly the leadership of Puntland, and its governor, Abdullahi Deni.
✅ Deni and his political circle see the rise of SSC-Maakhir — and any federal consolidation in the north — as a direct threat to their autonomy and influence. But more than that, Puntland is not acting alone. Behind Deni is the UAE, which has been funding, advising, and politically protecting his regime for years. The UAE views Somalia’s unity — and Türkiye’s growing footprint — as a danger to its influence in the Horn of Africa, especially given the prospect of looming #oilandgas competition with Mogadishu entering the market as a new supplier.
✅ The UAE’s strategy is clear: where it cannot dominate Mogadishu, it empowers regional spoilers like Deni. It supplies money, training, and foreign deals to Puntland outside of federal channels. It pushes narratives that portray the FGS as illegitimate and Turkish influence as “colonial,” all while building its own military logistics hub in Berbera through a now-dead agreement with Somaliland.
✅ Berbera is not a neutral port — it is a foreign-controlled power projection point, used for arms shipments, surveillance of Somali waters, and interference in federal politics. The UAE intends for Berbera — and by extension, Puntland — to serve as a counterweight to Mogadishu and Ankara.
✅ That’s why the proposed Somali–Turkish naval base matters so much. It would not just restore balance — it would shift the balance entirely.
✅ With a naval base in the north, Somalia could finally begin to defend its 3,300 km coastline from illegal fishing, smuggling, and foreign exploitation.
✅ It could enforce its maritime Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), protect regional trade, and launch anti-piracy operations.
✅ It could monitor foreign military activity, including UAE ships in Berbera, Israeli #drones, and #Ethiopia’s Red Sea ambitions.
✅ But beyond maritime security, the base would serve as a strategic firewall against foreign manipulation. It would stabilize SSC and Maakhir through jobs, infrastructure, and permanent federal presence. It would create economic ripple effects, making unity not just a legal concept — but a tangible reality for local communities. And critically, it would block any future attempt by secessionist or rogue actors to return by force.
✅ Of course, Puntland — under Deni — sees this as an existential threat. Not because it undermines the Somali people, but because it undermines his political business model, which depends on foreign funding, security exceptionalism, and weak federal enforcement. The naval base symbolizes a Somalia where no region gets to play both sides. Where national interest overrides personal ambition.
✅ That’s what makes this moment decisive. For Somalia, the base is not just a military installation — it is proof that federalism does not mean fragmentation, and that unity can be defended, not just imagined.
✅ And for Türkiye, this is the logical next step in a long-standing partnership built on mutual trust, respect, and shared strategic interest in the Red Sea corridor. The base could help Ankara secure key trade routes, expand geopolitical sphere of influence, help protect expensive #energy investments and guard the proposed satellite launch center near the Somali equator.
✅ The base would show the world that Somalia is stabilizing, that it is reclaiming control over its land and seas, and that it has partners willing to stand with it, not exploit it. It would tell Ethiopia: you cannot bypass Mogadishu through backdoor deals with separatists. It would tell the UAE: Somalia is not for sale. And it would tell the Somali people: you will never be alone anymore!
