Harvesting this morning in our forest garden: Blenheim Orange Apples.

Large apples which can be used for both cooking and eating. Blenheim Orange makes for a very vigorous tree - ladders were involved!

As well as providing diversity of planting and attracting beneficial pollinators and other pest predators it provides harvests. In the spring the flower petals make excellent garnishes and we can gather the hips in Autumn to make Rosehip Syrup.

Another wild plant which we let colonise (within reason) in our forest garden.

The giant version contains sap which has furocoumarin which makes your skin extremely sensitive to sunlight and can cause burns. As with all wild food be 100% sure of your identification - the family to which hogweed belongs does contains poisonous plants such as Hemlock.

Hogweed or common hogweed (Heracleum sphondylium) is a brilliant wild food sometimes confused with giant hogweed.

We are going to use this in a Parkin recipe for an extra spicy flavour. Last year we worked in conjunction with Professor Viren, Director of Human nutrition at the University of Sheffield to develop a recipe lower in added sugar.

@LouisaHWalker Well done for your perseverance. I was beaten by slugs for most of the annual veg and have fallen back on perennial crops (fruit trees, herbs, rhubarb, soft fruit, nut trees) and foraging. Some of the apples not looking bad!
