Nigeria Bans the Export of Raw Shea Nuts for Six Months

Nigeria is reported to be one of the world’s biggest producers of shea nuts, responsible for 40% of the annual crop. However, the nation gains very little share from that market.

Despite its notable contribution to the global shea nuts market, valued at $6.5 billion, Nigeria only receives 1% as most of its shea nuts are exported in raw form.

Vice President Kashim Shettima indicated that it is "unacceptable," adding that the 6-month export ban is aimed at transforming Nigeria from a supplier of raw nuts to a global hub for refined shea products used in cosmetics, food and pharmaceuticals.

The nation has set a new revenue target of $300 million a year from the shea nut market.
