My attention has been drawn to some media reports following my brief appearance earlier this morning on Channels TV regarding the ongoing reforms of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), particularly on the issue of the proposed uniform.

For the avoidance of doubt, yes, I mentioned Adire during the discussion. I also mentioned Ankara. My intention was simply to cite examples of some of the proposals that have been put forward in the course of our consultations. It was not an announcement that any particular fabric has been adopted or approved to replace the current NYSC uniform.

For the record, what we are considering are different options that tick all the right boxes in terms of professional outlook, a unique national identity, durability, functionality, cost-effectiveness, and the projection of national pride. No final decision has been taken on the fabric or design.

As with every aspect of the ongoing NYSC reforms, any eventual decision will be guided by extensive stakeholder engagement and what best serves the interests of the Scheme and the nation.

I respectfully urge Nigerians to continue to engage with the ongoing NYSC reform conversation based on its broader objectives and the immense benefits it holds for our young people and our country. The reforms are designed to make the Scheme more relevant to today's realities by improving employability, promoting entrepreneurship, strengthening national integration, enhancing service delivery, and creating a smoother transition from education to productive careers.

While conversations around the uniform are understandable, they should not overshadow the far-reaching reforms aimed at empowering millions of Nigerian youths and positioning the NYSC as a stronger platform for national development.

I appreciate the constructive feedback and assure Nigerians that every proposal will continue to be carefully considered in the best interest of the nation.

FG Moves to Scrap JSS–SSS Separation Policy Over Rising Student Dropouts

The Federal Government has announced plans to discontinue the policy separating the administration of Junior Secondary Schools (JSS) and Senior Secondary Schools (SSS), describing it as an ineffective reform that has contributed to rising school dropout rates.

Minister of Education, Dr. Olatunji Alausa, made the announcement on Tuesday in Abuja, saying the policy, which created separate management structures for JSS and SSS, has failed to achieve its objectives. According to him, it has created unnecessary administrative bottlenecks and made it more difficult for students to progress from junior to senior secondary school.

Alausa said millions of students expected to move from JSS to SSS are failing to make the transition, describing the situation as unacceptable. He directed officials of the Federal Ministry of Education to prepare a position paper for presentation to the National Council on Education (NCE) to facilitate the review and eventual discontinuation of the policy.

The minister also inaugurated a committee to ensure that Smart Schools, Bilingual Schools and Alternative Schools across the country become fully operational. He said the committee would accelerate project implementation, remove bottlenecks and ensure government-funded schools are completed, equipped, staffed and opened to students.

Alausa stressed that no publicly funded educational facility should remain abandoned or underutilised, noting that every completed school left unused represents lost opportunities for Nigerian children. He added that the Federal Government aims to make all Smart Schools and Bilingual Schools operational before the end of the year while focusing on measurable improvements in learning outcomes.

FG APPROVES HISTORIC NYSC REFORM, TO BE CIVILIAN-LED FOR FIRST TIME IN 53 YEARS

The Federal Government has approved a sweeping reform of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), marking the first comprehensive overhaul of the scheme since its establishment 53 years ago.

The landmark reform, approved by the Federal Executive Council (FEC), will see the NYSC led by a civilian in its operational leadership, while the military will continue to provide security for corps members across the country.

As part of the decision, FEC directed the Attorney-General of the Federation and the Ministry of Youth to amend the NYSC Act and relevant regulations to enable the immediate implementation of the new framework.

The reforms are designed to reposition the NYSC as a skill-oriented, productivity-driven, and youth-empowering institution aligned with the Tinubu administration’s goal of building a $1 trillion economy.

Speaking on the development, the Special Adviser to the President on Policy Coordination, Hadiza Bala Usman, said the reforms would strengthen human capital development and better prepare Nigerian graduates for national development.

She explained that the orientation camp would be restructured into three phases: the first two weeks will focus on civic responsibility, national values and leadership development; the next two weeks will cover career mapping, financial literacy, business planning and access to finance; while the final two weeks will provide specialised training based on each corps member’s chosen career stream.

Under the new framework, corps members will select one of 11 specialised streams, including Agric Corps, Medical Corps, Education Corps, Tech and Digital Corps, Legal Corps, Public Service Corps, Infrastructure Corps, Green Corps, Enterprise Corps, Creative Economy Corps, and Paramilitary and Security Corps.

According to Bala Usman, the specialised streams will equip graduates with practical skills tailored to their academic backgrounds, career interests and the country’s workforce needs.

She described the initiative as the first holistic reform of the NYSC since its creation in 1973, saying it reflects President Bola Tinubu’s commitment to transforming the scheme into a modern institution focused on youth empowerment, skills development and national productivity while preserving its role in promoting national unity.

ALLAH SARKI: This is an Islamic school teacher, Ummulkhairi, from Maraban Jos in Kaduna State, who was tragically killed and her body burned by an angry mob over allegations of child kidnapping.

Subsequent findings confirmed that the accusation was false.

This heartbreaking incident serves as a painful reminder of the dangers of mob justice, misinformation, and taking the law into one's own hands. Every allegation deserves proper investigation by the relevant authorities to ensure that innocent lives are not lost.

MOB JUSTICE CLAIMS THE LIFE OF ISLAMIC TEACHER IN JOS

Malama Ummulkhairi, a respected Islamic teacher and mother of more than five children, left her home in Maraban Jos to attend a religious lecture by respected Islamic scholars, including Malam Umar Wali. The event was scheduled to take place at Madrasatul Tashiyhul Iman, a school associated with Malama Mardiyya. After becoming separated from her companions and asking for directions to the venue, Ummulkhairi approached some children and asked for directions. Moments later, a group of women allegedly accused her of attempting to kidnap children.

She was taken to a police station, where family representatives and community leaders testified that she was a well-known teacher and that there was no evidence against her. Despite this, an angry mob gathered outside. Appeals for calm and due process were ignored.

In broad daylight, near the police station, she was brutally killed and burned alive. A motorcycle belonging to one of the scholars pleading for her safety was also set ablaze.

Today, her children are without their mother. Her husband left home with a healthy wife and returned only to witness the aftermath of unimaginable violence.

This tragedy raises painful questions: How many innocent people must die before we reject mob justice? When accusations become death sentences and evidence no longer matters, nobody is safe.

Jungle justice does not fight crime, it only destroys innocent lives, weakens the rule of law and fuels insecurity. If we continue down this path, we will not defeat crime; we will only create a society ruled by fear, suspicion, and violence.

May Almighty Allah forgive Malama Ummulkhairi, accept her among the righteous and grant her family the strength to bear this devastating loss.
