I'm building a marketplace for the African diaspora.
The concept: you have a parcel to send to Dakar, Abidjan or Kinshasa. A traveler has spare luggage space.
We connect the two. Secure payment.

Thread on the why and how. 🧵

1/ The diaspora already sends parcels through travelers. It's been this way forever. The problem: it's 100% informal. No secure payment, no recourse if the parcel gets lost.

2/ Traditional carriers (DHL, Chronopost, La Poste) charge €50 to €150 for a 5 kg parcel. For people sending every month, that adds up fast.

3/ We formalizes the informal system. Traveler posts their trip. Sender posts their parcel. Money is held until delivery is confirmed.
4/ We're early. A few dozen users.
Most active corridors: Paris-Dakar, Paris-Abidjan. Goal: first organic match + payment.

5/ If you're part of the diaspora or know someone who regularly sends parcels to Africa: We are a secure alternative.

I reached out to several African payment providers.

The answer: "You're not based in Africa. We can't work with you."

Here's how I made it happen anyway. 🧵

Globeshipper is peer-to-peer parcel shipping. A sender hands their package to a traveler with spare luggage space.
Our senders in Senegal, Cameroon, Côte d'Ivoire have been asking for Orange Money and MTN MoMo since day one. It's how they pay for everything.

The problem: several Mobile Money providers turned us down. Regulatory constraints, local licensing, KYC requirements.
Fair enough. But it didn't solve our users' problem.

So I looked for alternatives. Payment aggregators that bridge the gap. Some didn't cover the right countries. Some had unusable APIs. Some just never replied.
Eventually, we found the right fit. Tested it. Integrated it.

Today, Orange Money, Airtel Money, MTN MoMo and M-Pesa are live on Globeshipper. Visa and Mastercard still available for those who prefer.
When a partner says no, it's not the end. It's just a detour.
