@Hiperguy16 Occupied? I say united again. They started as the Kievan Rus, the same as Russia, and sharing basically the same language.
Before 2014, I saw many Ukrainians who didn't think of themselves as distinct from Russians. Seems like Ukrainian identity has only become popular recently.
@Hiperguy16 Not to mention everyone spoke Russian most of the time outside of Western Ukraine in USSR, you couldn't find almost any Ukrainian language school in Kiev during that period, or anything in Ukrainian in the city, and most identified as Russians even after the fall of USSR.
