We believe safe, appropriate housing is a human right. We hope to educate local government candidates on the critical shortage and their role in addressing it.
We do not have an official #AccessibleHousingPledge campaign this election, but you can still bring it up with your candidates, in your letters to the editor, and in your feed, using the hashtag.
The link to the website remains active, if you'd like to find more info there.
I challenge UBCO (or the arm building the tower) to be bold and innovative by making every single apartment in their building accessible, or at least adaptable. Why not?
This morning I heard Chris Walker's interview with Amanda, the wheelchair user who has been displaced by the UBCO tower project.
I can not fathom that UBCO would consider displacing her again. She has been displaced BY YOU, (even if by accident).
It actually doesn't matter how much her budget is, market accessible housing simply does not exist.
I hope that all of the parties involved in this brutal situation recognize the impact of this shortage and put their collective efforts into making change.
Help shape accessibility policy impacting people with disabilities in BC! Apply for funding from Ministry of Social Development and Poverty Reduction to host community-led engagement sessions on the draft accessibility standards by June 30: https://t.co/lfwFi2FSb1
This includes disabled seniors, who often end up moving to an institution or facility as they age due to inaccessible .
Well-designed housing does not exclude anyone.
Infill housing like this is inaccessible to anyone with mobility disabilities, who could not live here, but could not even visit here - to attend a meeting, join a family dinner, care for a loved one, join a birthday party, etc.
