2 Peter 2:4 is one of the most unusual verses in the New Testament🇻🇦

"God did not spare the angels who sinned, but cast them into Tartarus, delivering them into chains of darkness to be reserved for judgment."

Tartarus.

Peter, a Jewish fisherman from Galilee who spent his life in Jewish religious culture, wrote a letter in Greek to a mixed audience and chose this word. Not Sheol. Not Hades. Not Gehenna. The specifically Greek word for the prison beneath the underworld where the Titans were chained after losing the war against the Olympians.

This is not a linguistic accident.

In Greek mythology, the Titans were primordial beings of enormous power who predated the current divine order, who mixed with and corrupted it, and who were imprisoned in a specific subterranean location after being defeated.

Peter was making a theological statement using the most culturally loaded vocabulary available to his Greek readers.

He was saying: "That story you already know, the one about the Titans imprisoned in Tartarus, you're not completely wrong. But you don't know the true names. Let me tell you what actually happened."

The mythological tradition carried a memory. The apostle was giving it its proper theological context.
