This sounds like a horror movie. It is not. It is a documented agricultural crisis that the United States has been watching creep north for two years.

The New World Screwworm, scientific name Cochliomyia hominivorax, is a parasitic fly native to tropical regions of South America and Central America. It does not eat dead tissue. It specifically targets living animals. The female fly lays eggs in any open wound, even a small nick or insect bite, on a warm-blooded animal. The larvae that hatch begin feeding on the living tissue immediately. They burrow inward, producing toxins, expanding the wound, and attracting more flies. Without treatment, the infestation kills the animal within days.

The USDA confirmed this week that the pest has been found within 31 miles of the US border. That is not a comfortable buffer. Cattle move. Wildlife moves. The screwworm does not respect a fence line.

Here is why this is so significant for American agriculture. The United States eradicated the New World Screwworm from North America between 1958 and 1966 in one of the most successful agricultural science campaigns in history. The program, run jointly by the USDA and Mexico, released hundreds of millions of sterile male screwworm flies by aircraft across the affected zone. Sterile males mate with females but produce no offspring. Over time, the population collapses. The eradication cost tens of millions of dollars and took nearly a decade.

Before eradication, the screwworm was causing losses estimated at hundreds of millions of dollars annually to the US livestock industry. Cattle, deer, sheep, and other animals were being killed at scale. The cost to restore that eradication program if the pest reestablishes itself in the US would be far larger in today's terms.

The screwworm has been spreading northward through Panama, Guatemala, Honduras, and Mexico over the past several years. Mexico suspended live cattle exports to the US temporarily in 2024 as a precautionary response. The situation has been deteriorating since then.

The US border with Mexico is approximately 1,900 miles long. Thirty-one miles is close.

This is bigger than it sounds.

A North Carolina man has been charged with beating his 9 WEEK OLD baby daughter to de*th in Dunn NC.

According to the medical examiner, the baby girl suffered blunt force trauma to the head and multiple broken ribs.

The baby's own father, Terrior Byrd, was arrested for her m*rder.

Pure evil... I have no words.
