More than 300 Cal Poly Maritime Academy cadets are underway across the Pacific aboard Training Ship Golden Bear for the 2026 Summer Sea Term, the vessel’s final Pacific voyage. From Tahiti to Fiji, cadets are gaining experience at sea while continuing a decades-long tradition.

Cal Poly Maritime Academy senior mechanical engineering student Reid Burke won MARAD’s Administrator’s Challenge, an essay contest on U.S. maritime leadership. He was also honored at the National Maritime Day celebration in Washington, D.C.
