This study marks a timely contribution to the growing body of literature on the efficacy of acoustic indices as tools to measure biodiversity, especially in tropical dry forests. Check out the full article!
Thrilled to share a new study by @mayurikotian22, @Sakhasiddha, Pravar Mourya, @z_burivalova and, @Poojation from Project Dhvani and @UWMadison on the efficacy of acoustic indices for measuring biodiversity published in @ConservationSP. Quick thread below! https://t.co/0oxDa7p7Um
And therefore, in the current UN Decade on Restoration, we call attention to moving beyond the
generally adopted practice of estimating the presence or absence of species and
investigating species-level responses, such as behavioural changes, to ecological restoration.
Excited to share a new publication by our team, @mayurikotian22 , @PavithraS0102, @SangwanTaksh and, @Poojation where we used passive acoustic data to understand how a bird changes its
vocalization in response to the removal of an invasive shrub.

We also love this essay by Pooja Choksi on how she was cured of her tree blindness while in the field.

Wonderful to see Pooja Choksi's work using bioacoustics to quantify ecological restoration in this story!
@susieqllap interviewed @Poojation in Season 1 of The Subverse about her work.

Scientists are stringing recorders around trees in eastern Madhya Pradesh to listen to bird calls and monitor changes in the restored dry, deciduous forests after the removal of the invasive shrub Lantana camara. ✒️ @sahanaghosh8. @Poojation

In the buffer area of Kanha National Park in Madhya Pradesh, researchers ‘listened’ to forests in areas where Lantana Camara, the invasive species, was removed. What did they find out?

More than 100 former civil servants, members of the Constitutional Conduct Group (CCG), have written to all members of parliament in India expressing their concern with the Forest Conservation (Amendment) Bill, 2023.

Bill to amend Forest Conservation Act that received ~1,200 representations, incl **objections** from conservationists, tribal groups, environmental lawyers will go Parliament unchanged. Zero reason to think the parliamentary committee set-up wasn't a sham

Acoustic indices do not represent biodiversity measure (species richness) in dry forests of India… the patterns could be there, but the mechanism are the species sound! @mayurikotian22 great talk, looking forward for the paper in review @Poojation @z_burivalova
So much of what I understand about ecology is thanks to spending time in this beautiful corner of central India. Here's my journey to viewing the trees for what they are, and not just as data.
Ecologist Dr Pooja Choksi @Poojation writes for Dark 'n Light about how she cured her tree blindness when she was in the field. Armed with Pradip Krishen’s ‘The Jungle Trees of Central India’ as her field guide, she stopped looking at trees as just 'data'.
Of all the different coal cases that @lifeindia2016 works on, only *one* coal interest group is explicitly named by the Indian government in its investigations attached to the FIR as "impacting public interest".
Not NTPC, or Coal India, but *gasp*, Adani.
"we have been fighting for fisherfolk, farmers, forest communities. Almost 90% of our litigants are those whose livelihood/ culture depends on environment in that area." Read this old interview with Ritwick Dutta of @lifeindia2016 who now faces a CBI case

The narrative of evil foreign institutions working overtime to bring down everything Indian has become so entrenched in public consciousness that anyone who stands up to govt's own rule-breaking (esp in the environment field) carries a target on their back.
Info on all projes seeking #environment/#forest clearances now aligned with #RTI. This means agenda/MOM of which proposals r being considered, forests to be diverted, wildlife impacts will not be made public on PARIVESH. One has to file RTI to access
