The logic behind Defund the Police is not insane, but the slogan itself was politically disastrous.

The problem is that most Americans are not going to read a detailed policy proposal before forming an opinion. They hear “Defund the Police” and understandably assume it means eliminating police departments altogether.

But much of the actual policy was about reducing the responsibilities placed on police and investing more resources into mental health services, social workers, violence prevention, housing, youth programs, and other community services.

That is a legitimate policy debate. The messaging was the problem.

If your slogan requires a paragraph explaining that it does not actually mean what most people think it means when they hear it, then you have already lost a major part of the messaging battle.
