Absolutely delighted to have received a donation from Mr Russell Morgan of 2 photo albums detailing the life of a WREN during and post war. There are other fascinating photos too, such as these. Can you guess whether these were taken on a North Atlantic or Arctic Convoy? #WW2
It tells of the damage she sustained when she struck a magnetic mine laid by U-31, a U-boat which despite its short career, was a highly effective and formidable foe. For those interested we have exhibits on display at Pool House relating to the Nelson.
This #TrafalgarDay it seems fitting to share a post about Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson's namesake, HMS Nelson. Although admittedly, this story wasn't her finest moment.

A lovely old #postcard in our collection showing Ullapool with a very smartly dressed chap by the road. It's one of Valentines "Carbotype" Series cards, but sadly no date. Other examples date from c.1900 to c.1930. Perhaps the man was the photographer?

The top ring has repeating vertical grooves to the outside top & side edges, a single central white stripe, & a central red circle. It rotates for aligning directional headings as required. Amazing to think how crucial it was to a wartime airman all those years ago.
This AK39 “Armband-Kompass” (wrist compass) was made by Kadlec during WWII. Luftwaffe pilots and aircrew used these for navigation and survival. It’s made of Bakelite with a liquid-filled interior and is still fully functional. The strap is original.

HMS Leamington was transferred to the Royal Canadian Navy in late 1942 & was employed in the defence of shipping in the Western Atlantic. The crew endured extreme cold. In Jan 1943 the ship arrived in Halifax coated in ice

Two cordite carriers on display at Pool House: one plain, and one for ceremonial purposes. Can anyone tell us anything about the heraldic imagery on the ceremonial one? #WWII#RoyalNavy
An incredible photo of a long line of allied vessels at a Russian port waiting to unload oil, tanks, guns and planes etc. Pool House was the Naval Headquarters for the #ArcticConvoys during #WWII.
Spotlight on our special Sir Douglas Bader display this #BattleOfBritainDay. Bader was a remarkable flying ace who achieved great success despite the amputation of both legs after a 1931 air crash. On display at Pool House. #BattleOfBritain#WW2
Spotlight on a very special collection item. This box belonged to a Lieutenant A. R. Hezlet, a man who would become the Royal Navy's youngest submarine commander during #WW2 and had a very illustrious career ahead. Read his story here: https://t.co/J4WF4QT65g
Rather than travel in predictable straight lines, convoys zig-zagged to their destinations, which was tricky to co-ordinate under radio silence. Come see this zig-zag clock at Pool House to learn how it all worked.

There’s something very special about this clock. It was used to help convoy ships evade enemy u-boats and was an absolutely indispensable bit of kit. #ZigZagClock#Poolewe#NC500#WW2#BattleOfTheAtlantic
