@engineering_joy …. is really mentoring their students or doing the work of a PI (their students and Postdocs do it for them). If they are hired as a professor, that is evidence enough they are a professor, if they also have student/postdoc employees, they can be called a faculty boss.
@engineering_joy One of the issues in society today is inappropriate use of words (like earn/make). An example is “PI”. The only accurate term for a professor is professor of faculty boss. “Mentor” or “PI” requires a bit of investigation or additional information to know if that person…
@engineering_joy @lclkrist One of the only solutions that will save academia is to limit lab sizes. Federal funding should not be available to university labs over a certain size.
Postdocs do a lot of invisible labor in academia. The majority of which is helping PhD students. Many of us are happy to do it, but when students fail to acknowledge that help, especially in front of the PI, it kinda kills the vibe.
Give people credit for their work.
@engineering_joy The PI is the one who comes up with the ideas, manages the project and does the work. Fuck titles, what grant agencies need to know is that Postdocs and many grad students are the real PIs. Fuck titles.

@ItaiYanai Just the right amount of time for the do’er / innovator to complete the work but not long enough to reap the reward - just the right amount of time for the do’er or go broke and have to move on while some faculty boss or university/corporation to scoop up the reward. #ByDesign
@jdpereira Careers in science are an epic rus, vow of poverty for all but a connected few who land cushy faculty jobs. Academia is replete with corruption & nepotism. Huge percentage of faculty get job from spousal connections. Universities have departments & funds that ENCOURAGE nepotism.
@Srishti_SMishra@ItaiYanai Yes! Opportunities have nothing to do with what you know or your talent or experience (or work ethic, productivity etc.) but everything to do with WHO you know. A faculty boss in Ivy League or big well funded lab will get you a faculty job (or nepotism / spousal hires).
@Canderson0402 @MSMauro_@gaattagca@PostdocVoice Thats more marginalization of the competition (faulty fear their students get careers and compete with them in their fields for grants etc.). Who the hell needs “training” after a decade or more in school (to the extent grad school is training/mentored which is a stretch)
@Canderson0402 @MSMauro_@gaattagca@PostdocVoice Actually 20+ years ago it changed to “you are not entitled to a job even if you are willing to work”. NOW it’s “no matter what you do achieve, no matter your wit, will or work, you are entitled to nothing. We have confused acquisition and earn, and money and value are opposites
