I love the hymn, My Hope Is Built On Nothing Less. I'm deeply persuaded that its famous refrain is repeated over and over again to catch us each time we try in vain to find hope in sinking sand - "On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand / All other ground is sinking sand."

God, in love, will allow your faux rocks of situations, people, locations, possessions, positions, or answers to be swallowed up so you cry out for his help. As you struggle through the slippery instability of sinking sand in a fallen world, your weariness should be a sign.

There is a Rock of stability, and his name is Christ.

The beauty of the created world was never meant to satisfy our hearts. It was never meant to be the beauty that we would give ourselves to search for, live for, cry for and die for.

Rather, the physical beauties of earth are meant to be SIGN BEAUTIES. Everything we see, touch, taste and hear is designed to be a sign that points to the ULTIMATE BEAUTY: the One who created the world and everything in it.

You are welcomed to join me for a daily scripture break.

Philippians 2:14:

"Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure, “children of God without fault in a warped and crooked generation.”

Sometimes when you read a verse with a cornucopia of similar verses throughout the Bible you begin to recognize a very serious subject that we almost ignore because it is so pervasive.  God hates grumbling. How do I know?   He unequivocally instructs us to do EVERYTHING without grumbling or arguing. I pay especially close attention when God speaks in absolutes because He means what He is saying and there are no excuses.

Let’s take a closer look. “ Do everything…” not some things or most things ... “without grumbling or arguing.”  Wow, will X survive?

Here are some foundational scriptures to avoid grumbling and arguing, especially James 5:9 & Psalm 106:25.

1. James 5:9 - "Don’t grumble against one another, brothers and sisters, or you will be judged. The Judge is standing at the door!”

2. I Peter 4:9 - "Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.”

3. John 6:41-43 -"At this the Jews there began to grumble about Him because He said, “I am the bread that came down from heaven.” They said, “Is this not Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can He now say, ‘I came down from heaven’?” “Stop grumbling among yourselves,” Jesus answered."

Jesus is clearly irritated by the Jews' grumbling in this passage.

4. Numbers 14:27 - “How long shall this wicked generation grumble against Me? I have heard the grumbling of the people of Israel, which they grumble against Me.”

5. Exodus 16:7-8 - “...and in the morning you will see the glory of the Lord, because He has heard your grumbling against Him. Who are we, that you should grumble against us?” Moses also said, “You will know that it was the Lord when He gives you meat to eat in the evening and all the bread you want in the morning, because He has heard your grumbling against Him. Who are we? You are not grumbling against us, but against the Lord.”

(This is the passage I learned long ago, never grumble about the provision God has gifted you. Be grateful and thankful for His provision because we don’t deserve it and we aren’t entitled to it.)

6. John 6:61 - "Aware that His disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, “Does this offend you?”

7. James 4:1-3 -"What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you? You desire but do not have, so you kill. You covet but you cannot get what you want, so you quarrel and fight. You do not have because you do not ask God. When you ask, you do not receive, because you ask with wrong motives, that you may spend what you get on your pleasures.”

In the Book of James, James the Apostle uses a very frank yet beautifully descriptive style in his writings.

This passage is truly astonishing when you think about it. When we don't get what we want (our desires)- "we kill, we quarrel and fight, and often when we do get what we want, we splurge our provision on our pleasures." I think sometimes I'm making "progress" in my Christian journey but the truth is there still remain areas in my heart chalked with selfish desires; a battleground of selfish desires if you will along with some distasteful fruits. That's sobering.

8. I Thessalonians 5:18 - “...give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

Be careful here.  We don't give thanks FOR all circumstances especially evil circumstances but IN all circumstances.  There is a difference.  In Romans 8:28 says, "And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose." God doesn't bring evil into our lives and He protects us. I Corinthians 10:13 says, "No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; He will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, He will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

9. I Timothy 2:8 - "Therefore I want the men everywhere to pray, lifting up holy hands without anger or disputing;"

10. Ephesians 4:29 - "Do not let any unwholesome talk come out of your mouths, but only what is helpful for building others up according to their needs, that it may benefit those who listen.

This isn't just profane or lewd language but grumbling could be included.

11. Psalm 106:25 - "They grumbled in their tents and did not obey the Lord.”
(This is another reason why God doesn’t allow any grumbling because it leads to disobedience.)   This verse always puzzled me, did they think God couldn't hear them?

12. I Corinthians 10:8-11 - "We should not commit sexual immorality, as some of them did—and in one day twenty-three thousand of them died. We should not test Christ, as some of them did—and were killed by snakes. And do not grumble, as some of them did—and were killed by the destroying angel. These things happened to them as examples and were written down as warnings for us, on whom the culmination of the ages has come.

This passage is referring to the time of Moses and the Israelites. As you can see, God hates grumbling. I know I've stated that several times now but this is how our memory works.

During this week, conduct an experiment and record how many times you complain or grumble about anything. In just a few days you may discover you have a problem. Many of us have this problem because it's just so prevalent in our culture.  Our culture is inundated with self-absorbed people who are never happy or grateful.

So can we debate issues on X, of course? Can we protest political policies we disagree with, of course? God doesn’t approve of grumbling about Him/HisWord/ His Will/ His provision for us. If you gave someone a gift and they criticized it in front of you, would you be happy? God hears us and we can't hide (in a tent or our homes, for example that doesn't work).

This will require a heartfelt commitment to resist grumbling and a concerted effort to vigilantly guard your speech.  Proverbs 29:20 says, "Do you see someone who speaks in haste? There is more hope for a fool than for them."

It's an important message just lurking out there beware.

Let’s give praise and thanksgiving to our Lord! He is a good God.
