As I broke bread with about 20 Afghan families in the warming Texas spring, I watched the children laugh and play outside. We couldn’t save all of Afghanistan but we saved them. They are Americans now, all of them, and they represent the very best of all of us.

Wishing all who celebrate a very happy Eid al-Fitr. I was fortunate to celebrate with my Afghan family in Texas, the Tanins. I was honored to share their culture, food, and presence for the day. It was a true surprise when General Dawlat Khan Zadran joined us to celebrate.

I still have a lot of emotion when it comes to Afghanistan, for obvious reasons. I have been challenged to understand the meaning of the sacrifice we all made there. Today, even just for a few hours, it all made a little more sense.
