It’s easy to look at Rajinikanth today and forget how unconventional his journey once was.

When K. Balachander cast him in Moondru Mudichu, the decision wasn’t welcomed by everyone. Some around the film felt the role would better suit Kamal Haasan. Others questioned Rajinikanth’s appearance — his hair, his colour, and whether he even fit the character they had in mind.

But KB believed in his decision.

That matters because Rajinikanth’s career became a rejection of the conventional hero template.
