Her message throws light on discrimination that many Northeastern Indians have spoken about for years. Reports and personal accounts have documented instances of racial slurs and harassment targeting people from the region, including Indians being casually labelled “Chinese” or subjected to other derogatory remarks.

Her simple message is a reminder that India’s diversity is not a reason to question someone’s identity. “People from the Northeast are Indians, and they should never have to prove it” — a sentiment that echoes the young girl’s message and the voices of many who have come out in her support.
