Irrespective of whether INDIA forms the government or not, this is a significant election result for the country. It decimates the mainstream perception of the BJP’s invincibility. We now know that the fascists can be voted out, if not today then tomorrow.
Another arrogant person, Madhavi Latha, who shot a pretend arrow at a Mosque and harassed Muslim voters during the election, is trailing. Justice is sweet.
the realisation that your male friends that you confided in are just as misogynistic as the “other men” that they shit on will shatter you as a woman. just on a random tuesday afternoon you will hear them talk and you’ll be like.. oh.. wait…
Hardik Pandya announced as MI captain.
Only a single man, who captained his side in the 1st edition of the IPL (2008), will continue to captain the same side in the 17th edition of the IPL (2024).
Thala for a reason.
Long post.
Actor Vichitra spoke about getting assaulted at her workplace 20 years ago, on a mainstream Tamil un/scripted reality show.
She reported the incident immediately; took it up legally. However her case is an example of what happens when you report a case of assault even immediately - NOTHING.
Also note how India Today has written about this case of abuse and harassment way back in 2002.
I am quoting this article verbatim, lest they take this down - dated Jan 28 2002.
"What does a screen vamp do when she's phasing out? Retire? Try TV? Nope. She courts controversy.
Take glam moll Vichitra, who earned the nickname "Madippu (broad-hipped) Amsa" after her 1990s Tamil film Thalai Vaasal. The voluptuous actress has lately been throwing her girth around to push a case she had filed against stunt director A. Vijay for alleged physical abuse during the filming of the Telugu film Bhalevadivayya Basu last year."
This is how horribly they wrote about women who reported physical assault.
A Vijay has gone ahead to work successfully in films like Vikrant Rona and Buddha Hoga Tera Baap
Mainstream society and media have always harassed, shamed and silenced women for reporting. Why would anyone go through the additional harassment for reporting abuse?
Vichitra complained to the Nadigar Sangam - Headed by none other than Radha Ravi - he of course, asked her to shut up.
The channel may have told her to NOT name any names - even though the complaint and the accused names are in public domain - because the channel does not want to deal with defamation cases.
Vichitra, DOES say that her dream, her goals, her talent and the sadness of losing them is there in a corner of her mind.
She ALSO says she had to go find make her own family when she didn't find it.
And until Vichitra found a Shaji who stood by her and after he gave her the go-ahead to speak up if she wants to - she was empowered.
It is noteworthy that her abusers, silencers, have continued to prosper.
But what is realllllly aggravating - even if someone does not find this 'ganniyam' enough, 'mature' enough is nobody need to comment really or give a Visesh Tippani on
When / how long after an incident, a survivor should speak; (Women themselves say this, but it trauma coping mechanisms from women and men mansplaining cannot be equated.
Whether or not one should name their abuser/s (There are repercussions to this)
It is NOT upto others to speculate or arrive at the aggressor's names - all speculators are anonymous, can delete their social media accounts and vanish into thin air - but it is ONLY the survivor that pays the price for naming people and there are real life ramifications to this. Someone else suffers for your 10 minutes of gossip.
However
I HAVE REPEATED THIS FOR AT LEAST 5 1/2 YEARS
NONE OF THESE BIG STARS ARE DOING ANYTHING TO SET UP AN ICC / POSH UNIT IN ANY OF THE SANGAMS
Today, a female dubbing artiste has been terminated because she went to the police station to report a case of sexual harassment in a dubbing studio. 20 years ago Radha Ravi asked Vichitra "Why come to the Sangam? Go to the police station."
Today the Dubbing Union warns members NOT to go to the Police Station, penalize you if youdo, can harass others to NOT employ you if you go to the police to report a case of sexual harassment.
And none of these actor - politicians will do anything to change anything, to make workplaces safer - not for children, not for adults.
Mr. Kamal Haasan's Tone-Rewarding, Calmness-Encouraging speech will have real life ramifacations for women who are not even allowed their justified anger. Krodham not allowed. Must be Ganniyam. 'Ipdi pannittaane padupaavi nnu kooda sollala' also frowned upon is my takeaway, as a survivor. 'Censored the abusers names' is also congratulated.
He encourages the audience to applaud what he terms as 'mature behaviour', somehow insinuating THIS is how survivors should speak about sexual harassment in a socially palatable, acceptable manner. Survivors' careers, time, life, youth, years can go to docks who cares, but make sure you speak about it in a way that I can 'respect' you.
For all his stature, his much publicised erudition, had he that he feels sorry that her talent had been erased, that she had to 'choose' to quit the industry, that she got no justice, that the sangams that were supposed to have stood for her, failed miserably - but no. Nothing.
Each time these stalwarts I hope they ll say and do the right thing or at least their script writers will advise them.
Again - Disappointment only.
End.
