BREAKING | 🇧🇾🇱🇹‼️ Belarus has restored a long-abandoned railway branch ending near the Lithuanian border, close to the Latežeris border crossing and the strategically sensitive Suwałki Gap.

The railway was originally built in 1934 and connects near Porechye with the historic Warsaw–St. Petersburg railway. It once continued into Lithuania toward Druskininkai, but the Lithuanian section was abandoned in 2000. The tracks remained on the Belarusian side but had largely fallen out of use. Belarus has now renovated its section of the railway and constructed a road extending from the line toward the Lithuanian border.

The nearby Latežeris crossing has remained closed since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine and has since been reinforced by Lithuania under the Baltic Defence Line project, including anti-tank “dragon’s teeth” and other engineering obstacles intended to restrict the movement of military vehicles. An additional site near the restored railway also appears to contain older infrastructure that may date back to the Soviet period.

The restoration is notable because of its location near the Suwałki Gap, the narrow area separating Belarus from Russia’s Kaliningrad region and linking the Baltic states with the rest of NATO by land. While restoring the railway does not by itself establish a military purpose, renewed transport infrastructure so close to this strategically important area is likely to draw considerable attention.
