Institutions and systems matter, but lasting protection is built from within, by people who show up for each other.
To every volunteer, community leader, and family who shows up, this day is yours too.🌻
On #GandhiJayanti, we remember the Father of our Nation and his belief in #Sarvodaya, the welfare of all. 🙏
He believed real change doesn't come from a few people in authority. It comes when communities build the capacity to protect themselves. 🌱
#Prerana#CommunityLedChange
We see this every day across Prerana's work:
🤝 Communities taking ownership of their own safety and wellbeing 🧡
Volunteers stepping up as leaders, safeguarding children and vulnerable people 🏡
Families and neighbours becoming the first line of protection

#Exclusive: Priti Patkar’s journey began with a 1986 visit to Mumbai’s Kamathipura, where she saw children growing up amid exploitation and questioned whether they should inherit the same circumstances. She later co-founded Prerana with her husband, Dr. Pravin Patkar, to support women and children affected by trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation. The organisation focuses on protection, education, healthcare, counselling and opportunities beyond rescue.
👉🏻 From Rescue To Prevention
Priti recognised that removing children from immediate danger was not enough. Prerana’s Night Care Centre provided children with a safe space, education, healthcare, nutrition and psychosocial support, while continuing to recognise their relationships with their mothers.
👉🏻 Expanding Choices
Her work also challenges stigma and the assumption that children born to women in prostitution will inevitably follow the same path. Prerana has worked with families, communities and institutions to reduce vulnerability to exploitation and re-trafficking.
The Logical Indian’s Perspective
Priti’s journey shows why lasting child protection requires more than rescue. Safety, dignity, education, family support and meaningful choices can help children imagine futures beyond the circumstances of their birth. How can communities create more pathways that allow every child to choose their own future?

In these walls, the future is being written. 🍀
Our deepest gratitude to the teachers who show up with determination, creating a space where every child, no matter their circumstances, has the chance to learn and grow. 📚✨
