Several years ago, I approached @SpeakerMcCarthy about the need to help pastors who had been improperly guided to leave Social Security years ago. Together with Congressman McCarthy, and then in recent years with @RepVinceFong, we have worked to see the Clergy Act passed.

The Clergy Act will allow eligible clergy to re-enroll in Social Security, giving them access to benefits, including Medicare, in their senior years.

I’m thrilled that the Clergy Act has now passed the Senate. I expect the President will sign it into law, and I encourage pastors who are eligible to take advantage of its benefits.

I know everyone remembers this but October 1884 it was and a Protestant preacher on stage with Republican nominee James Blaine denounced the Democrats as the party of “Rum, Romanism, and Rebellion” which pissed off the pivotal Catholic drunkard vote and tipped the election to the Democrats thereby establishing our beautiful national tradition of being embarrassed by people who say things that are true and hilarious.
