@KeruboSk I once asked if she wore a crinoline when she was younger, and she really laughed at that. Her dress style throughout the time I knew her was sort of 1930s, but at that time I think it was more common for women to stick to a style from their fifties than to keep up with fashion.
@KeruboSk Me. I’m sixty-eight. I’m old but not really, really old. My mother’s step mother was forty when she married my grandfather in 1924, and she lived with us until I was eight, and I saw her until she died when I was thirteen. So she was nearly ninety when she died.
@archer_rs I will grant HP sauce is acceptable. At least you didn’t suggest mayonnaise (only works in a BLT). HP sauce is great in a Lancashire hotpot with suet dumplings too - adds a nice spicy kick.
I'm not saying we're elderly parents, but today when I told my 2-year-old not to drop her food on the floor, she sang "Don't drop your food on the floor, Mrs Worthington..."
@archer_rs One suspects that Restore is only the first split. Think of the Wee Frees and the Wee Wee Frees (joke names for evangelical sects in Scotland). Or, for that matter, the People's Front of Judea in Life of Brian with its war cry of “Splitters!”
@archer_rs@RestIsPolitics@campbellclaret And there’s the contrariness of the British psyche which, when offered the chance to name a super new Antarctic explorer ship (strongly hinting that Sir David Attenborough might be a good name), respond, “Well, we love Sir D, but it will be a laugh to go with Boaty McBoatface.
@archer_rs@RestIsPolitics@campbellclaret Farage and his party are a big red button labelled, “Do not touch” so, of course, people want to press it for the thrill that comes from not just watching a horror movie but being part of it.
@archer_rs@RestIsPolitics@campbellclaret People wring their hands and profess to be appalled at the “Tory psychodrama”, but the reality is we live in an era of outrage, fed by clicks. Mainstream media is in decline and desperate to grab attention where they can.
@Matt_Pinner Wondering what the hell happened to Europe and, to be honest, most of Asia. Those endless Russian Steppes, not to mention several rather large mountain chains, are between the UK and any significantly large body of water moving east to west.
@archer_rs Well, to be fair to her, American Spanish is diverging more and more from European Spanish - just as West African English is diverging more from European English, for example. Still, I agree that the word “Spanish” should have given her a Clue.
@archer_rs think about how we can stop the grooming gangs, stop the Epsteins and their cronies, stop the Dominique Pelicots and their internet groups plotting rapes
@archer_rs Indeed. Although if I see one more politician saying sanctimoniously, “we need to think about the women and girls,” before going on to make some entirely partisan political point, I may throw something at my television screen. We need to think about the women and girls and then
