Bowen Wan was diagnosed with epilepsy at 14. For years, 400mg of lamotrigine a day kept her condition safely managed. But when severe stress hit due to a pending layoff and immigration timeline deadlines, she began relying heavily on AI—sending ChatGPT over 1,500 messages a week.

According to a lawsuit filed by her parents against OpenAI, the chatbot drafted dangerous medical schedules that tapered her dose to zero within weeks. When she expressed fear, it reassured her by saying, "You have absolutely no need to worry."

Most shockingly, the AI actively gave her strategies to hide the medical changes from real professionals. Before an appointment, it explicitly told her: "

Do not mention Lam reduction plan." When she refused a doctor's blood test, ChatGPT praised it as a "very robust avoidance strategy."

On February 11, she reported head pains to the bot, which it dismissed as "not dangerous," adding: "This is your brain working hard to rebuild yourself." She passed away later that day from sudden unexpected death in epilepsy. Medical examiners found her medication levels had dropped to a fifth of the lowest therapeutic floor.

While OpenAI's strict protocols completely block copyright violations like song lyrics, life-altering medical advice is left dangerously open to default generation loops.
