As someone who got to witness Cristiano Ronaldo develop into one of the best players on the planet nearly 20 years ago, it’s sad to see what he’s let himself become at the twilight of his career.

The tension within the Portugal squad, the obsession with Messi, it just feels like the ego has consumed him and having Piers Morgan as your biggest cheerleader is embarrassing too.

Grateful as a Man Utd fan that I got to witness him at his very best in 2008.

It was a gross miscalculation for him to be in that Portugal squad for this World Cup, he’s 41.

The highlight of his career is that history permitted him to stand beside Messi in the public imagination.
