Women (and everyone else, really): Is your UPI ID your mobile#, like 9810012345@paytm? DON'T. Unless you want to expose your mobile/WA to every driver/shopkeeper/delivery/random guy you pay.

Important issue highlighted in this @Business_Line_ op-ed: UPI has a privacy problem. Esp as for many, their phone numbers become their UPI IDs. Have had women friends tell me how random people have sent chatty WAs, or worse, after a UPI payment.

Change it to a word you'll remember; even your name is ok (for instance mine's pkr*@paytm). This isn't of course the systemic fix, but it's something YOU can do as a UPI user.

For the systemic fix: @NPCI_NPCI, and TPAPs like @Paytm, @PhonePe, need to fix this issue. DON'T suggest phone number based IDs on the app. Or else: create a secondary alphanumeric ID which will be always shown when the user's making a QR or P2P payment.

In any case, why display the full UPI handle of the sender to the recipient? Is there any regulatory reason to do that? I don't believe so. And it's probably in violation of the DPDP Act. @vijayshekhar @dilipasbe

Now that the student protests are probably over, for now, based on the performative resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan that should have happened a month or more earlier, and the Center's promises (which absolutely NO ONE believes) to not go after the protesters, we are left with questions that will not be taken up by mainstream media/TOI/NDTV – I trust there are some who will.

1. Who ordered/okayed this extreme, sadistic, excessive, China-like brutality by Delhi Police and RAF/CRPF including pellet guns, against protesting students in the Capital? Amit Shah? Modi? Can’t imagine anyone lower down taking those calls.

2. Who ordered the specific steps to harass the citizens of Delhi, purely to make a point, blame the students, and amplify the impact of the protests on common citizens? Impeding protesters was an excuse: the real goal was to hurt the citizens of Delhi and blame it on the students, to try and turn public sentiment against them. It did not work.

3. Why were 17-18 metro stations shut down, all the way to Jorbagh and New Delhi Railway Station and beyond, affecting office and blue collar workers, including government workers?

4. What will they do with the enormous volumes of data collected on protesters incl the facial-recognition scans? When and how will they go after them? Is anyone naïve enough to believe they’ll simply ignore or delete all that information? Make no mistake: this government is vicious. They will set out to destroy student lives.

5. Who ordered the repeated internet shutdowns that shut down most commerce, payments, auto and taxi bookings, everything, in areas far wider than the protest areas?

6. What is the use of Digital India founded on DPIs that support every citizen service... and can be switched off by a single on-off switch? Oh wait. That IS the whole point of Digital India, isn’t it? An on-off switch in the hands of the government.

And Misra confirmed, the government KNEW this for 2 years. They hid it during elections. The call only came once votes were counted.

This is what 12 years of suit-boot economics, crony capitalism, and GDP optics actually looks like underneath.

Rahul Gandhi called it in July 2025: “Indian economy is DEAD.”

The Indian Express just put the post-mortem report on the table.

They didn’t mismanage the economy.

They HID the mismanagement from you; until after you voted.

Why Did Sridhar Vembu Really Come to India?

The story you've been sold: A billionaire tech entrepreneur renounces Silicon Valley, returns to a Tamil Nadu village, lives simply, cycles to work, talks about dharma and reversing brain drain. Simple living, high thinking. A saint in a cotton shirt.

The story the California courts tell: He moved to India in late 2019. Filed for divorce in 2021. In between, he transferred ownership of Zoho's US subsidiary to entities controlled by his associate Tony Thomas and his sister Radha Vembu, who now holds an estimated 47.8% stake in the company, without his wife's knowledge or consent.

A California court didn't mince words. It found that Vembu had acted "without regard for respondent's interests in community assets and without regard for the law." It ordered him to post a $1.7 billion bond. Unprecedented, the court itself said.

His wife Pramila Srinivasan, who by her own account supported the household in Zoho's early years and was kept in the dark about the ownership restructuring, is still fighting the case in California. Their son, who has autism and requires lifelong care, lives with her in the Bay Area. He is 26 years old.

Vembu left him behind.

The move to rural India wasn't a philosophical act. It was a jurisdictional one. California's community property law requires marital assets to be split equally in a divorce.

The solution, apparently, was to move the assets and himself out of California's reach before the divorce became formal. The village was the alibi. The dharma was the disguise. This is the conclusion the evidence points to.

The trial is not yet concluded and Vembu has denied all allegations, calling them complete fiction. But the court, looking at the same evidence, found his explanations not credible.

And then came the reward. The Modi government gave him the Padma Shri on January 26, 2021 and appointed him to the National Security Advisory Board just days later, in February 2021.

The formal divorce filing came in August that year. The government honoured him while the marriage was already in ruins and the asset transfers were already underway.

But the courts and the Padma Shri are almost secondary. The real villainy is what he did to millions of ordinary Indians who believed him.

The man built an entire public persona on selflessness, on the idea that he had walked away from wealth and comfort for the sake of rural youth, for India, for something larger than himself. People quoted him. Teachers cited him. Young men from small towns looked up to him.

It was a performance.

Underneath the saint was a man who had abandoned his wife of nearly three decades, walked away from a son who needed him, moved a billion dollar empire out of legal reach, and dressed the whole operation up as enlightenment.

That is the real story of why Sridhar Vembu came to India.
