@ChowderSingh Even today meals are very cheap and can be had at the minimum for Rs 20-50 and can steadily climb if you order more and more stuff. The waiters memorise the menus and keep the accounts of each table not on paper but by memory.

@ChowderSingh The most interesting to many would be the mutton curries cooked without onion or garlic but lip smackingly delicious. There were other specialities like the very East Bengali Chitol Maacher muitthya, Jiol Maacher Jhol , fish roe fritters, duck egg curries etc.

@ChowderSingh Siddheswari was known for its Kobiraji Jhol. The name indicates (kobiraj=Ayurvedic doctor) that it was supposed to be healthy, a light fish curry made with minimal oil and nutritive vegetables like raw banana, raw papaya, ginger and cumin

@ChowderSingh Each establishment had their own signature dishes. Most of them had large menus going up to almost 25-28 veg dishes, 5-10 diff kinds of fish, eggs and mutton. Young Bengal was known for its collocassia dish with Hilda head which Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose enjoyed.
