Rain won't be widespread every day, but evening and night thunderstorms will be a daily affair somewhere across the city. Some areas may get a good spell today, while neighboring localities may stay dry. If your area misses out today, don't worry, there's a good chance you'll get your turn the very next day as these rain clouds keep shifting across Chennai.

If you're heading out after 4 pm, keep your rain gear handy. A few places could see sudden, intense downpours with gusty winds, so don't get caught off guard.

This won't be an all-day rain event. Instead, expect the typical evening convection, with thunderstorms popping up across different parts of Chennai almost every day over the coming week till Friday 02 to 8th August. Track the weather and enjoy the much needed rains.

A surprising development has emerged in recent days. The Chief Wildlife Warden of Uttarakhand has issued orders to the concerned forest ranges to kill 13 leopards and 3 bears, and to tranquilise 21 tigers.
These animals have repeatedly attacked villagers, killing and injuring several people. The root causes are clear: large-scale conversion of forest land into agricultural fields, indiscriminate exploitation of forests by local communities, and the rapid rise in tiger numbers. As a result, leopards have been pushed towards human settlements.
This is by no means a sudden or unexpected process. When even tigers are beginning to face a shortage of suitable habitat in Uttarakhand, what chance do leopards have?
Today, nearly 40 tigers are already confined behind bars at the Jim Corbett rescue centre due to human-wildlife conflict. These additional 21 tigers further highlight the deteriorating condition of our forests. Interestingly, most of these are young tigers that were raised by their mothers in buffer zones and areas close to villages.
I cannot view this issue from only one side. These animals are precious, but so are human lives.
In recent years, the pace of human encroachment into forests has been alarming. Strict action must be taken against this instead of providing political protection by treating these encroachers as a vote bank. All forest land under illegal occupation should be immediately freed and handed back to wildlife.
I once again request the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Uttarakhand, Shri Pushkar Singh Dhami, and the Chief Wildlife Warden to revoke or thoroughly review this order to kill these animals. A better, more balanced plan for these animals must be developed.

This could be one of the toughest climate tests Tamil Nadu has faced, with one of the strongest El Nino events the planet has witnessed. The key challenges before us include:

Below normal Southwest Monsoon rainfall over the Western Ghats catchments, affecting reservoir inflows and water security.

Persistent and intense heat across Tamil Nadu, even as we enter August, highlighting the prolonged impact of El Nino.

The Northeast Monsoon (October–December) will be the defining factor for Tamil Nadu this year. Its performance will determine the State's water security, agricultural prospects, and overall resilience to drought. Equally important is the distribution of rainfall. Rather than highly concentrated, extreme rainfall events as witnessed during the strong El Nino years of 2015 and 2023, Tamil Nadu would benefit from a well distributed monsoon similar to 1997, another strong El Nino year, when rainfall was more evenly spread across the season. Such a pattern would help maximize groundwater recharge, reservoir storage, and agricultural benefits while reducing the risk of floods and waterlogging.
