‘In a tribute on X, Turkey’s minister of sports Osman Aşkın Bak compared the 567 Palestinians murdered by Israel to the 572 footballers playing in the World Cup’ - FIFA suspended Russia, why not Israel?
The killing of a Palestinian footballer by Israeli forces on Monday has reignited calls for Fifa to ban Israel amid its ongoing genocide in Gaza.
Saleem al-Ashqar, 32, was cycling in search of a gas cylinder when Israeli soldiers shot him in the town of al-Qarara, just outside Khan Younis.
The Khadamat Khan Younis goalkeeper was taken to hospital but died of severe internal hemorrhaging and organ damage, a spokesperson for the Palestinian Football Association (PFA) said.
“Despite medical efforts, the hospital's severely limited capabilities – exacerbated by the collapse of Gaza's health sector due to the ongoing war of extermination – made it impossible to control the internal bleeding,” Dima Youssef told the New Arab. “Given the severity of his injuries, Al-Ashqar passed away about two hours after arriving at the hospital.”
The goalkeeper’s death brings the number of Palestinian athletes killed by Israel since October 2023 to 1,009, including at least 567 footballers.
In a tribute on X, Turkey’s minister of sports Osman Aşkın Bak compared the 567 Palestinians murdered by Israel to the 572 footballers playing in the World Cup.
Spanish-Moroccan sports journalist Leyla Hamed wrote that Fifa suspends football federations “almost every week” but repeatedly refused to issue a decision on Israel. “How much investigation does the most documented genocide in history need?” she asked.
In 2024, the PFA asked Fifa to expel the Israel Football Association amid its genocide in Gaza.
This March, Fifa finally announced it would not kick out Israel but fined its football authority $190,000 on charges relating to “discriminatory and racist abuse”.
Meanwhile, it suspended Russia from the World Cup days after its invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
The body has been silent on the systematic targeting of Palestinian athletes since the start of the genocide in October 2023, drawing condemnation from advocacy groups including the Palestinian Campaign for the Academic and Cultural Boycott of Israel.
🇵🇸 Israeli settlers set fire to a home in the Ka’abneh Bedouin community east of Taybeh in the occupied West Bank in an early morning raid Friday, local sources told Tasnim.
The community is largely made up of families already displaced by settlers from communities like Wadi al-Siq in the slopes east of Taybeh, where a settler campaign emptied some 20 Bedouin communities after October 2023.
Taybeh itself, the last entirely Christian town in the West Bank, has faced sustained settler attacks over the past year, including fires set at the fifth-century Church of St. George, torched cars and fields, and near-daily incursions from outposts ringing its eastern lands, which church leaders told Wafa threatens “our very existence on this land.”
For your information, this video was taken just an hour ago. It shows Israel blowing up buildings east of Khan Younis.
Again and again, shame on Western media that continues to call this a “ceasefire.”
By the Western media’s definition, an Israeli “ceasefire” apparently includes the continued killing of families, especially those with very young children, blowing up residential buildings, burning tents sheltering displaced people, banning international journalists, blocking life-saving medical supplies, and restricting, and on many days completely preventing, patients from leaving Gaza for urgently needed medical treatment abroad.
Palantir cleared 183,000 patients from one hospital’s waiting list. Or did it?
If you’ve heard ministers repeating that figure, you must read this exposé from @_TheLondoner:

NOT GUILTY
Another seven Just Stop Oil supporters acquitted after slow march.
When juries hear the motivations for peaceful protests, that motivation being to save lives, they find defendants not-guilty.
This is why juries matter. It’s common sense!

I have written before that, viewed through the lens of international law, the so-called “Board of Peace” is an extension of a unlawful occupation and of an ongoing genocide and, as such, is a criminal enterprise, headed by one of the principal perpetrators of the unlawful occupation and genocide (US) with the collaboration of the other (Israel). Neither the UN Security Council nor any other body has the power or authority to legalize this criminal enterprise. Now the criminal “Board” is seeking to crush one of the last essential obstacles to the genocide (UNRWA) and to redirect (steal) its resources for its own nefarious purposes. I say again: any state, organization, or individual that collaborates with this criminal enterprise should face accountability, no matter how long it takes.
🚨BREAKING: At least one Palestinian was killed and several civilians were injured, including infants and children, in an Israeli airstrike on Gaza City.
Today hundreds of people joined our lobby of Parliament to demand MPs and the government take urgent action on Palestine.
We demanded an end Starmer’s policy on Israel and pressure it to end its ongoing genocide against the Palestinian people through sanctions and an arms embargo.

In a discussion on #politicslondon about Starmers record well done to @faizashaheen for mentioning Palestine & for pointing out that when it comes to scrapping the 2 child benefit cap he had to be forced to do it after suspending Labour MPs from the PLP who voted to scrap it!
