I know most politicians are corrupt, that's why legislation such as the SAVE Act - which is supported by over 80% of Americans - hasn't passed. Just because Sanders may be less dirty than many of his colleagues doesn't make him good. And his policies are bad for the very people he claims to represent.

Bernie benefits from the advantages of incumbents - US senators of both parties have over an 80% reelection rate.

He's popular because he espouses socialism to people who are rightly looking for something better. I understand this, many of my great students struggle to find good jobs despite having wonderful qualifications.

However, socialism doesn't work. We need to deport illegal immigrants and eliminate work visas to give young Americans better job and housing opportunities.

The 1920-21 depression was the sharpest economic contraction in American history, yet you've probably never heard of it. Industrial production collapsed 32%. Unemployment spiked from 4% to 12% in twelve months. By every measure, this downturn dwarfed the initial shock of 1929.

President Warren Harding faced enormous pressure to "do something." Labor leaders demanded public works programs. Businessmen begged for bailouts and trade protection. Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon advised Harding to slash government spending and let wages fall. Commerce Secretary Herbert Hoover (yes, that Hoover) pushed for massive federal intervention.

Harding chose Mellon. The federal budget dropped from $6.4 billion to $3.2 billion in two years. No stimulus packages. No bailouts. No alphabet soup of new agencies. Government employment fell 40%. When you let markets clear, they clear fast.

The recovery started in July 1921. By 1923, unemployment had dropped to 2.4% and industrial production reached new highs. The entire episode lasted eighteen months from peak to full recovery. Compare that to Japan's lost decade of intervention, or the European debt crisis that dragged on for years, or our own jobless recovery after 2008.

Most economics textbooks omit this episode because liquidating malinvestments and allowing price adjustments works exactly as free market theory predicts: a fact that destroys the Keynesian narrative that government must spend its way out of recessions. Politicians today claim they learned the lessons of the 1930s, but they studiously ignore the more important lesson of 1921.

Thank you, I didn't realize these purchases were royalty free. That makes the situation a little better, but does nothing about the practice of wealthy donors buying thousands of books to give money to candidates.

It should be illegal for sitting politicians to profit from book sales while in office; even the appearance of inpropriety reduces faith in our system and many of our politicians go way past the appearance.

That said, I applaud Bernie's capitalism. As you and others have said, it is legal for him to leverage his position of elected power into book sales. However since he promotes socialism for everyone else while profiting from capitalism and owning three very nice houses, I have nothing but scorn for this hypocrit.

In September 1942, a single Japanese floatplane lifted off from a submarine off the coast of Oregon. In the cockpit sat Chief Warrant Officer Nobuo Fujita, carrying two 170-pound incendiary bombs and a 400-year-old samurai sword beside him in the cramped space.

His mission?

Drop the bombs over the forests of the Pacific Northwest, start a massive firestorm, and force the U.S. military to pull vital resources away from the Pacific theater.

Fujita released his bombs over Brookings, Oregon. But the mission failed. Recent rain had soaked the forest, and alert park rangers put out the small fires almost immediately. The war continued, and the strange, isolated attack slowly slipped into the margins of history.

Until 20 years later.

In 1962, a civic group in Brookings came up with an extraordinary idea. They found Fujita and invited him back as the guest of honor at their local festival.

The invitation caused national controversy and split the town. But the deepest conflict was inside Fujita himself. Deeply ashamed of what he had done during the war, Fujita accepted the invitation with a dark private promise. He packed his family’s ancient samurai sword in his luggage. Later, he admitted that if the Americans put him on trial for war crimes or publicly humiliated him, he planned to use the sword to commit seppuku, ritual suicide, right there.

But when he stepped off the plane, he was met not with hatred, but with handshakes, applause, and a town offering real forgiveness.

Overwhelmed by the mercy of the people he had once attacked, Fujita stepped to the podium and did something no one forgot. He knelt and gave the town his most treasured possession, his family’s 400-year-old samurai sword, as a lasting promise of peace.

For the rest of his life, Fujita helped fund student exchange programs between Japan and Oregon. He even returned to the exact place he had bombed and planted a redwood “peace tree.” When he died in 1997, Brookings named him an honorary citizen, and his daughter later returned to the forest to scatter some of his ashes on the land he had once tried to burn.

Today, that 400-year-old sword is displayed inside the Brookings Public Library, not as a trophy of war, but as a masterpiece of peace.
