How Trump strangles democracy
He reassigned or forced out several dozen gov employees working to fight foreign interference in U.S. elections.
He ordered Justice Dept to stop enforcing Foreign Corrupt Practices Act for six months & told prosecutors to not bringing FCPA cases.
We are living in a dangerous and unprecedented moment in American history.
I’m getting a lot of calls from people who are not only upset about what’s happening, but are wondering how we best go forward.
Here are my thoughts:
Elon Musk unmasks himself…
Musk has intervened weeks before German federal elections. Even more extraordinary, he has thrown his weight behind an anti-American, Russia-loving, climate-change-denying populist party whose leaders include Nazi apologists and antisemites. [WaPo]
📣 ‘The Cambridge Handbook of Methods in Conversation Analysis’ — encompassing *34* chapters + appendices, written by nearly *50* authors from across *6* continents and more than *two dozen* countries — is officially set to appear NEXT MONTH (Nov 2024)! 🤩 More info coming soon!
@KevinAWhitehead As I recall, Schegloff once commented to me that they decided to work out speaker sequencing so as to get it out of the way because it kept intruding on what they were investigating: action.
@saul@HI_Lab_Tufts@TheRealMUmair@therealjmertens@dnd_journal 2 things
1. Perhaps it is worth thinking about the Perry/Lord work on the effect of literacy on memory [literacy transforms memory], when one considers transcribing with/without a preliminary transcript.
2. The paramount value of a transcript is not the product, but the process.
@EMdoesCA @avid_apathy @fridde_rux I’ve now pulled out the “Completable Projects…” draft. I’m afraid it’s just not in any shape to circulate yet. Sorry. Perhaps this reminder will move it closer to the top of the pile of things I’m working on.
@avid_apathy @EMdoesCA @fridde_rux Just, FYI, there is one very brief published reference to these ideas (in the Concluding Remarks, if I remember it correctly).
Lerner, G. H. (1995). Turn design and the organization of participation in instructional activities. Discourse Processes, 19(1), 111-131.
@avid_apathy @EMdoesCA @fridde_rux Yes, there was such a talk, and there is a ‘partial draft’ of a hopefully still completable paper (which on occasion I’ve let folks see in its unfinished state). I’ll take a look and report back.
@rolsi_journal If I may respond to this with something Sacks once said: ‘We should follow Chuck’s [Goodwin] lead. If you want to add a new symbol you should write a paper [that requires it].’
@rolsi_journal @DoctorJRo@saul@Marco_Pino_ As I recall, when asked about “her theory’ (in a job interview) Pomerantz once responded something like, ‘You tell me what part theory plays in your work, and I’ll tell you what plays that part in my work.’
@rolsi_journal @DoctorJRo@saul@Marco_Pino_ As I recall, when asked about “theory’, Schegloff once responded something like, ‘you can get your ideas from anywhere’ [The implied question here is, ‘what do you do with those ideas once you have them.”]
