@MollyJongFast@ScottPelley And, of course, it's the podcasters, in desperate search of audience share, attacking Pelley personally like he's the devil when it's their 1st opinion about the man.
This story is bigger than any one person, even @ScottPelley. This is about the decline and fall of "60 Minutes."
@BrandiKruse@CBSNews So, this post has blown up. Responses:
1. Pelley had no intention of working for @bariweiss after she took the 5th in their meeting and called it "finding a way back."
2. He's 68. He doesn't need another job.
3. As usual, MAGA thinks their people are above the Constitution.
@BrandiKruse@CBSNews Yes, because opinions of an intern on one camera shot outweigh 32 years of independent reporting.
When the First Amendment is officially set on fire, we all know exactly where you'll be. Letting the suits tell you what to think and write.
@AmoneyResists And there it is.
Bari Weiss took the Fifth in response to questions from a key member of her staff, then tried to frame it like Pelley was the malcontent.
MAGA's been trying to make this about Pelley all day, when it's always been about Bari Weiss.
Just shut the show down.
@DecodingFoxNews You are literally correct. Thank you Prof. Jacqueline Sharkey for pointing that out: "Sometimes ya just gotta tell your boss, f*ck you, I'm not doing this."
@OurShallowState "60 Minutes" has been the most-watched news program for decades because of its editorial independence--a bright, shining symbol of 1st Amendment freedom.
When it's Pelley saying that's not only gone, but that politicians are pre-approving show content & staff, sound the alarm.
@Madisox43@BrandiKruse@CBSNews Why can't a network news show let politicians decide who interviews them and what goes into their segments? Those sorts of questions?
That has *never* been what "60 Minutes" has been about. That show has fought and died for its First Amendment independence since Harry Reasoner.
@lpolgreen Bingo. People seem to keep missing this point and are locked into the argument that people are saying he shouldn't have been fired.
He knew. He was 68. And he wanted to expose journalistic malpractice on the way out.
@T0dd_Lester@ShaunQ62@Dumb_pseudonym@BrandiKruse@CBSNews When someone is telling me I have a "fundamental misunderstanding of how the First Amendment works," I'm going to bring up exactly why my education proves that wrong.
That's why I brought it up.
Is that OK?
@T0dd_Lester@ShaunQ62@Dumb_pseudonym@BrandiKruse@CBSNews Actually, all journalism grads are required to take a press law course. Which details the history of First Amendment cases, including the impact of prior restraint.
I also took multiple Media Ethics courses.
Some of my favorite classes, actually.
You were saying?
@ChuckSRQ@gregbradyx 🤣 So Bari Weiss is responsible for the growth of 9 percent, but this same 9 percent growth means the producers were losing viewers?
How limber are those mental gymnastics making you?
@ShaunQ62@Dumb_pseudonym@T0dd_Lester@BrandiKruse@CBSNews Doesn't define me either. 😊 CBS News is now allowing politicians to pre-approve both interviewers and content--with Trump setting the disgusting precedent. Scott Pelley verified this in his outgoing response to his termination. But sure, keep somehow claiming it's a good thing.
@runningmoron@BrandiKruse@CBSNews Then America has already lost.
If the American people are perfectly fine with politicians pre-approving "60 Minutes" interviewers and content, then the First Amendment is dead, and we have killed it.
