Thank you #EASM2023 for the keynote invitation to discuss sport & climate change - a recording will be available soon
@EASMBoard celebrates 30yrs in 2023, & I've been coming for 27yrs, since #EASM1996 in Montpellier - it was a fantastic honour to be asked: I hope I did you proud

@stuart_biddle I didn't know Simon as well as others here, but spent some great times with him at a conference or two. It's another contemporary lost to this heartbreaking disease. It always makes me reflect: he's not the first, he won't be the last, and there but for the grace of God go I 😢
Just two weeks ago from the Plenary Platform at @EASMBoard, I asked “Does Sport Care Enough about #ClimateChange?” https://t.co/0rzze7Z7Sq
Clearly, in @FIFAcom’s case, the answer is “NO!”
This 👇 is a ludicrous (and wholly hypocritical) decision.

‼️In My Opinion: "FIFA’s announcement to host the 2030 World Cup across 3 continents is at odds with their commitments to cut emissions."
📝University of Sussex researcher, Freddie Daley, says asking fans to fly around the world by plane is wrong.
Couldn’t agree more, @IainLindsey - what these people share is that, in comparison to the general population, they are “freaks” with abnormal abilities and experiences about as far removed from the challenges of those who are inactive as it is possible to be.
Thanks @danroan - the problem is structural rather than the emissions of this or that event... & carbon emissions of everyday sport participation (due to sheer volume of travel generated) dwarf that of even the largest sport event or league. Sport needs a transformational rethink
@ProfMikeWeed@ProfRob_Wilson@EASMBoard To be fair professor in here we do make the point that by Fifa's own estimation, the 2026 World Cup will be the most emitting tournament it has ever staged

Sport presented as the victim, @ProfRob_Wilson & @danroan when really its the villain - as I showed at @EASMBoard's #EASM2023 this AM, sport's carbon footprint exceeds that to be expected of a sector of its size by at least 50% - part of the problem, not part of the solution.
Here’s one for @ProfMikeWeed. Could climate change impact the 2026 World Cup?
Or should the question be; could the 2026 World Cup impact climate change.
‘Sport is sport washing itself’.
Very timely piece after todays keynote address at #EASM23@EASMBoard.
The @EASMBoard organisers have videoed the #EASM2023 keynotes, and will be making them available next week. I'll post a link in my feed when they're available.
@diti121688@ProfMikeWeed The last few slides here highlight Mike’s main points - sport is responsible, needs to do much more and the suggestions need to be radical #EASM2023
@MarkCooperSport@EASMBoard@EASM2018 Hi Mark - it was filmed… I think the organisers are going to put it out on social media after the conference. When it’s available, I’ll put it on my feed.
Five years on from my last @EASMBoard keynote at @EASM2018, why is #CallingBullOnSport still necessary?
Find out about the things sport doesn’t want to take responsibility for in my #EASM2023 keynote at 9am tomorrow (Friday) morning.
Some questions I’ll be exploring in Friday morning’s @EASMBoard keynote:
(i) Does sport disproportionately impact climate change?
(ii) Can sport combat climate change?
(iii) What is sport’s appetite for change?
#EASM2023
“I hate sport!”. The keynote of @ProfMikeWeed on sport and climate change @EASMBoard questions sport researchers’ premise that sport is always doing good. #EASM2023
@russinthezone@EASMBoard Thanks Russell - it just exists as a presentation at the moment… a bit more work on the analysis to do to get it ready to publish

‘It’s done!
Friday morning’s @EASMBoard Keynote is all ready
…and would you like to guess the answers to the questions?
It’s not too far from “NO” and “NOT ENOUGH”
