@marcelanotes Can't help but wonder what the bilingual schoolchildren of Texas from the 1990s are doing now. Did they stay in Texas? Is bilingual teaching in DISD not sufficiently lucrative to lure them to the profession?
It's striking how international educators are saving Texas schools by reducing teacher vacancies. The employer fee for the H-1B visa is modest compared to the need for bilingual educators. With demographics shifting, how long until Texas can train it's own bilingual teachers?
From this morning's @dallasnews:
Dallas ISD relies on international teachers more than any other school district in the U.S. In 2022, the district sponsored 232 workers on H-1B visas, nearly 4x more than Houston, the second-highest among school districts in the country.
If you are anywhere near Atlanta GO and stand in solidarity with #StopCopCity and these outrageous RICO charges that treat activism as terrorism.
The stakes here are huge.
The movement brings so many struggles together and the precedent is harrowing.
“To accept one’s past – one’s history – is not the same thing as drowning in it; it is learning how to use it. An invented past can never be used; it cracks and crumbles under the pressures of life like clay in a season of drought.”
Happy Birthday, James Baldwin (1924-1987)
Through his words and leadership, writer James Baldwin exposed and explored issues of race, sexual orientation and class in America. A self-professed "witness to the truth," he forced the country to confront its own painful truths.
He was born #OTD in 1924.
#TheMarchContinues
This #PrideMonth, it is important to recognize non-binary and gender nonconforming people have been here from the beginning of the U.S. Here is a thread on one of the most influential such persons in early America. An abolitionist minister known as The Public Universal Friend. 1/
The SPLC urges the @DeptofDefense to remove/rename ALL assets honoring the Confederacy — without further delay.

Abortion bans cause outsized harm for people of color. Increasing restrictions on reproductive care inflict a significant physical and mental burden that ripples across generations—especially for people of color.

Diamund is a survivor of assault, but locking her attacker away didn’t feel like it would solve anything. Diamund knew the impact that incarceration could have on someone’s life and they didn’t want that for the person who assaulted them.
@unhealthytruth Hey @unhealthytruth: you've mixed me up with the writer from Futurism with the same name as mine. Check out that Maggie Harrison's bio at Futurism -- the publication where you found the article -- to find out how to communicate with them, if that's your goal.
Looking forward to @fabyjosaphat's winning novel, KINGDOM OF NO TOMORROW, that "sheds light on the misunderstood revolutionary party of the Black Panthers, bridging the gap between Afro Caribbean & Afro American communities, and granting agency to women caught in a world of men."

Researching reproductive freedoms for future essays? Looking for a way to meet the legislation challenge? Consider the impact of the Helms Amendment.
The Helms amendment forces providers to distinguish between abortion & other health services, meaning only those with means are able to access essential abortion care. It actively discriminates against poor Black and brown women in communities around the world. #RepealHelms!
