As more details surface regarding operation #spiderweb I wanted to touch further on what this means for the world, along with what’s this means for the current Russian bomber fleet and the TU160M ( White Swan ). 

Ukraines Operation code named ( SpiderWeb) didn’t just destroy aircraft, it destroyed the idea that bases far from the front lines are considered “safe”. 117 remote - controlled drones were smuggled in to Russia over an 18 months period, trained with AI to also target specific bomber aircraft imagery, and launched towards parked aircraft by operators miles away.

The estimate on the raid for destroyed or Degraded aircraft stands at over 7 billion in hardware, with an estimate cost for the Ukrainians somewhere over 500k. Tu95s, Tu160s and Tu22 M3 strategic bombers were all hit, and the best prize - 1 or 2 A-50 airborne early warning aircraft with a cost of 300-350 million unit.
In total that would represent roughly one third of Russias long range strike fleet, and even if satellite imagery rolls back those numbers, the scale of damage and distance of strikes is hard to miss.

So what dos this mean for Russians bomber fleet?

Operation spiderweb will have an immediate effect on Russias bomber fleet and national transportation methods. All of the nations trucks are being halted and inspected thoroughly at border crossings causing shipping delays across the nations.
Surviving bombers will now need to be relocated and Russia is going to need to invest in protecting far back previously thought safe bases from repeat attack. Investing in 30mm cannons with radar guided systems, electronic warfare jammers and more - this all costs money, time and man power and also diverts trained soldiers who should be rotating to the front. 

After “SpiderWeb” Russia will lean harder on the TU160M bomber known as the “White Swan” or “Blackjack” as a Nato call sign and currently is the only Strategic bomber that is still in production for Russia.
The platform was originally built by the Soviet Union in response to the B1 and has been upgraded ever since with the last version ( the TU160M2 ) rolling off the line in Jan 2022.
Russia plans to build 50 of the new TU160M2 bombers while upgrading 16 additional existing aircraft. Through all of 2024 though, the Russian Aerospace force only delivered 4 of the new TU160 platforms which brought the total fleet to 13.

The Tu160 should not be underestimated, though the platform is old the modernization program has significantly enhanced the Tu160M’s capabilities. The platform can reach speeds of Mach 2.05 giving it the ability to outrun most fighter jets and surface to air threats. The platform runs 4 NK-32 after burning turbofan engines giving it a range of 7,640 miles or 12,300km, and opens the door to intercontinental strikes with out the need for refueling.

The TU160 is still Russians most advanced bomber but its not without problems, its also Russias more expensive and complex aircraft in production today. Building these are slow, and filling the 50 aircraft requested will take years. Now that Russian bases far from the front are being actively targeted by Ukrainian efforts and killing these platforms on the ground, it will cause a higher level of stress on long range operations for Russians in this war. 

Now that Russian production has been restarted on the TU160M it does also highlight its need for viable long range strike platforms amid losing similar aircraft, and delays in the development of the PAK DA Stealth Bomber.

Russian “Hunter” Sukhoi S-70 Okhotnik-B UCAV, Russia’s most advanced and experimental UAV was targeted and show down.

The photo I’ve attached shows the star that we witness in the wreckage, also the size is huge in comparison to the human standing on top in the last photo.

The Sukhoi S-70 Okhotnik-B, also referred to as Hunter-B, is a Russian stealth heavy unmanned combat aerial vehicle being developed by Sukhoi and Russian Aircraft Corporation MiG as a sixth-generation aircraft project, each system costs $15-18 millions and its development cost no less than $170 million.

In the future, it is planned to act under the control of pilots of Su-57 jets, similarly to the USAF Skyborg program.

Allegedly- The drone lost control with the Su-57 and was heading towards the Ukrainian airspace, probably fear of capture of this aircraft through EW and reverse engineering it caused the high command to destroy it, after the shot we see a sharp turn from the fighter behind the drone.
