Project profile: "Self-sufficient Integrated Multi-Trophic AquaPonic systems for improving food production sustainability and brackish water use and recycling"

SIMTAP is an innovative food production system designed for the Mediterranean area, according to the local climatic constraints and technological level. It is based on a traditional Aquaponic system integrated with algae, detritivores and filter-feeder species.

#LaStatale team set up a data collection campaign involving different #aquaculture companies to compare the #SIMTAP systems and the commercial ones; those data will be useful to select the most #sustainable systems, as well as to identify possible solutions for impact reduction.

At the Italian Pavillion in #Expo2020, @Unipisa will present its most relevant researches financed by H2020 programm and by other frameworks such as PRIMA-MED: they deal with hot-topics such as #sustainability to create a more sustainable future, like the #SIMTAP project!

Several plant species are under investigation as candidate crops in marine aquaponics. Swiss chard and glasswort were the most suitable crops, respectively, in the autumn-winter season and in spring-summer.
