Marcelle Werbrouck wrote several books & more than 150 papers, many of which focused on the role of women in ancient #Egypt. Although she always worked in the shadow of her mentor Jean Capart, her contribution to the development of Egyptology in Belgium can not be underestimated.
On International Women’s Day, we put the spotlight on Marcelle Werbrouck, Belgium’s first female #Egyptologist. She studied Egyptology with Jean Capart and quickly became one of his closest collaborators, both in the @ArtHistoryBRU & the Fondation Égyptologique Reine Élisabeth.
Jean Capart appointed Marcelle Werbrouck field director for the excavations at #Elkab but this was rejected by Étienne Drioton, head of the Service des Antiquités de l’Égypte, because she was a woman.

This photo was recently discovered in the archives of the RMAH & shows part of the workspaces in the library prior to the creation of the FÉRÉ. It is annotated by #Capart (“affectueux souvenirs des belles heures de travail, Jean Capart, Octobre 1923”). #suraproject#egyptology
Jean #Capart was not only instrumental in the development of the Egyptological collection of @ArtHistoryBRU . By donating his personal collection of over a thousand books and journals to the museum in 1901, he also laid the foundations for its famous Egyptological library.
With the creation of the Fondation Égyptologique Reine Élisabeth (FÉRÉ, https://t.co/16FC8hxs6J) in October 1923, the library soon developed into one of the best Egyptological libraries in the world.
Decauville railways were used for carting off rubble & blocks from the northern gate of the great hypostyle hall towards this storage yard. Along the enclosure wall of the complex, one also sees the remains of the temple of Ptah, being cleared by Legrain's team since 1899.
Jean Capart retired
On September 30th, 1946, Jean Capart officially retired from a long, fruitful carrier dedicated to the development of Egyptology in Belgium. This photo illustrates his keen interest for the documentation of Egyptian monuments & sites. #sura#egyptology#karnak
Taken from the top of the first pylon of the great temple of #Amun, we see a large area located to the north of the temple where Georges #Legrain (Service des Antiquités de l'Égypte) and his team stored the column and architrave blocks from the dismantled great hypostyle hall.
