I notice everything when others are still asleeping

真正开始毁掉自己，往往不是在失败的时候。

而是在所有人都开始夸他的时候。

我最近看了翟山鹰十多分钟的演讲，本来以为又是场普通的金融课。

结果前两分钟，他几乎没讲金融。

他说了句话，我反复听了好几遍：

人在台上骗别人并不可怕，最可怕的是骗着骗着，最后把自己也骗了。

��轻讲师第一次站上台，可能很清楚自己有几斤几两。

但台下的人越来越多。

有人鼓掌，有人崇拜，有人叫他老师，有人开始把他说的每句话都当成答案。

第一次，他知道自己在表演。

到了第100次，他可能真的开始相信：

自己就是那个“神”。

翟山鹰把这种东西比喻成架梯子。

别人夸你，就是在你脚下搭梯子。

名气是层台阶。

财富是层台阶。

掌声是层台阶。

地位又是层台阶。

真正的问题，不是这架梯子能让你爬多高。

而是当你已经爬到自己都不敢往下看的高度时，只要下面有人轻轻踹脚，你可能连重新开始的机会都没有。

所以他说：

梯子搁在那，不爬。永远要知道自己是谁。

更有意思的是，后面他讲商业，金融教育，企业家，其实始终没有离开这个逻辑。

他说自己在清华讲了11年，在北大讲了10年，但对很多所谓的EMBA和总裁班评价极其直接：

大量课程最终解决的不是企业家的问题，而是培训机构自己的收入问题。

学校要赚钱。

媒体要赚钱。

培训机构也要赚钱。

当整个系统都有自己的利益目标时，你不能默认有人会自动来救你。

所以他反复说了句话：

“我们需要自己救自己。”

这可能才是这十分钟真正值得听的地方。

财富，教育，商业，甚至所谓的“成功”，最后都指向同个问题：

当所有人都在告诉你“你已经成功了”的时候，

你还能不能清楚地知道自己是谁。

失败会让人怀疑自己。

成功有时候更危险。

因为它会让你相信根本不存在的自己。

而大多数人真正摔下来的地方，

往往不是谷底。

是梯子的最高处。

Ten million people have watched an MIT professor accidentally destroy the executive coaching industry. He filmed the lecture once in January 2018 and died eighteen months later.

Executive coaches charge fifteen thousand dollars a session to teach a third of what he covered in one hour for free.

His name was Patrick Winston. He ran the MIT Artificial Intelligence Laboratory from 1972 to 1997 and wrote the AI textbook every computer science major in the world read for thirty years.

Every January for four decades, he gave a lecture called "How to Speak."

His entire framework fits on a napkin. Do not read. Be in the image. Keep images simple. Eliminate clutter. Start with an empathetic connection. End with a punch line the audience can repeat over dinner. Never open with a joke. Never end with "thank you."

That last rule alone has probably cost the executive coaching industry a hundred million dollars.

"Your success in life will be determined largely by your ability to speak, your ability to write, and the quality of your ideas. In that order."

That is the actual opening line of the lecture. Winston believed it strongly enough to spend fifty years teaching computer scientists how to talk.

Founders spend $80,000 on an MBA and then hire a communications coach to teach them the same material Winston filmed once for free. Engineers write brilliant code and lose promotions to teammates who watched this lecture on the train.

The lecture is free on MIT OpenCourseWare. The textbook is free on his page.

John Geanakoplos, Yale professor and former Managing Director at a $30 billion hedge fund:

"Take a coin that only ever lands on plus one or minus one, nothing in between. Flip it enough times and add up the results, and you get the exact same bell curve as something that could land on any number at all. That's not a coincidence. It's basically the entire foundation of modern finance."

this is the trick that lets one formula describe almost everything, even things that started out looking nothing alike.

cut through the surprise and the mechanism is oddly elegant. two coins that only ever produce two very different, very extreme outcomes each, add enough of them together and the sum starts looking like the smooth, familiar bell curve, regardless of how weird the individual pieces were.

that's why the normal distribution shows up everywhere in finance. it's not that markets are naturally bell shaped. it's that adding together enough independent things tends to produce that shape no matter what the pieces looked like on their own.

zoom out to why that's actually a dangerous convenience. the bell curve assumes big surprises basically don't happen, the tails die off fast. but real markets keep producing exactly the giant surprises this assumption says should almost never occur.

most people accepting a model built on a bell curve assume it's describing something true about markets, when it's often just describing what happens mathematically when you add enough small independent things together, whether or not that assumption actually holds.

this is exactly what "normally distributed returns" assumptions skip. the shape is convenient and well understood. whether reality actually behaves that smoothly, especially in the tails, is the question that gets quietly assumed away. the bell curve is beautiful math. it was never a promise that reality would behave that politely.
