When Marina Dalglish was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003, the Dalglish family were suddenly seeing hospitals from the other side.

Marina was treated at Aintree University Hospital in Liverpool and recovered.

And once she had come through it, the family wanted to do something more than just move on.

They wanted to say thank you properly.

“We set up the Marina Dalglish Appeal in 2005, to say thank you from the whole family for the support Marina received during her treatment for breast cancer.”

There was one simple aim.

“To make a difference.”

And over the years, it became much bigger than just one family’s thank you.

The money helped cancer patients on Merseyside and beyond.

It helped fund treatment centres.

It helped buy equipment.

It helped people who were going through the same sort of thing Marina had gone through.

By 2007, the appeal had helped raise £1.5 million for a new oncology centre at Aintree.

Later, it put £2 million towards an intra-operative MRI scanner at The Walton Centre, giving surgeons better technology while operating on patients with brain tumours and complex conditions.

But when people spoke about Kenny and all the admiration he received, he still turned it back to Marina.

“I’ve just always tried to do the right thing.”

Then he made sure the credit went where he felt it belonged.

“But as far as our Dalglish family is concerned, the real one to look up to has been Marina.”

“Her charity has raised millions and millions of pounds for cancer treatment on Merseyside.”

As of today the Marina Dalglish Appeal has raised over £14 million.
