On this day, 17 years ago, three elite snipers took shots that were heard around the world.

In 2009, four Somali pirates had seized the US flagged cargo ship Maersk Alabama 240 nautical miles off the coast of Somalia.

Captain Richard Phillips had voluntarily surrendered himself as a hostage to protect his crew and was being held on a small lifeboat in the Indian Ocean.

DEVGRU (Seal Team 6) operators parachuted into the ocean from a US aircraft and were taken aboard USS Bainbridge, which became their base of operations. SEAL snipers set up on the ship, and waited for the order to shoot.

After a period of waiting, a pirate was seen pointing an AK-47 directly at Phillips. The order was given, and three SEAL snipers fired simultaneously from the moving destroyer. All pirates were killed with shots to the head. Captain Phillips walked out alive.

17 years ago, DEVGRU reminded the world what American precision looks like.
