Last week, the Tennessee General Assembly and Governor Bill Lee passed one of our 2024 legislative priorities--the Resilient Tennessee Revolving Loan Fund, providing rural communities access to the funds they need to mitigate disasters.

TN needs a mesonet for days like today! A system of weather stations across the state giving local officials real time data from a variety of sensors would improve early warning systems and help to track storm systems like the one moving through our state today.

What does a mesonet measure? Each mesonet station is equipped with upwards of a dozen sensors, measuring rainfall, soil moisture, air pressure, etc. This data can give real time data to local officials to inform decisions about storm warnings and evacuation routes.

TN is in the “new” Tornado Alley—Dixie Alley. Over the last 30 years, tornadoes have been touching down further east than they used to, leaving Tornado Alley for “Dixie Alley.” TN needs tools like the mesonet to enhance early warning systems and give communities time to prepare.
