The Brian Kennedy awards recognize the contribution of attendees at Hand In Hand LGBTQ+ Choir Festival to our queer choral community. The highest level of award is our gold medal, celebrating an astounding 30 or more years of singing in an LGBTQ choir in the UK and/or Ireland.

Our next round table, on Wed 7 Aug, brings together LGBTQ choirs, youth music services and queer youth services to discuss setting up choirs for the younger queer community. What are the rationales? How does a choir get traction? What are the pitfalls?

It is often hard to know where to start though, and all too easy to make mistakes. Proud Voices would like to help foster these kinds of connections across geographies, sharing our experiences to enable equitable, resilent and long-lasting partnerships between choirs and regions.

Connections like this can also lead to joint musical or LGBT-activism related projects, access to funding streams and rich choral exchanges. Best of all, making new friends is always fun!

International choral connections are a great way of understanding what choirs and queerness mean in different cultural contexts, broadening and deepening our definitions of group singing and non-normative identities.
