Maybe it's time we can clarify this: where else in the world is having a Pharmacist available to the patient considered professional exclusion? What makes Kenya so unique that ensuring a rural or grassroots patient has access to a highly trained Pharmacist is suddenly a bad thing?

Our neighbours, and even Globally, pharmacist oversight is the norm to ensure strengthened pharmaceutical care. Why should the Kenyan patient be asked or subjected to accept less?

This training was for Pharmacists to ensure they can safely dispense, administer and manage medicines as part of patient care. It was organised and led by a Pharmacist. Imagine no amount of gaslighting or diminishing the role of the Pharmacist will exclude us from patient care. 😊
We shall remain accountable across the entire medicines lifecycle from research and manufacturing to supply chain, dispensing, administration, pharmaceutical care and post-market surveillance.

Can you imagine...
No Pharmacist shall be excluded from the medicines lifecycle; from research, manufacturing and regulation, through supply, dispensing and pharmaceutical care, to pharmacovigilance after the medicine reaches the patient.
Nope, thinking Pharmacists must choose between manufacturing and the patient shall not work. 😊
Patient safety demands high standards of professional responsibility throughout. We shall not rest until Pharmacy in Kenya is practised to the standards we admire globally. They are right there in the community outlets which aren't even allowed to open or operate without the Pharmacist present.
And if “mbili mara tatu” is the global gold standard for patient safety, basi tutafanya tu hivyo. 😄💊🇰🇪

@KenyaGovernors, please stop issuing business permits to pharmaceutical outlets that do not hold the required PPB licence. When a county legitimises an unlicensed outlet through an SBP, it creates the appearance that an illegal pharmaceutical business is authorised to operate.
Medicines are not ordinary commodities of trade. Unregulated access contributes to misuse, irrational use and threatens patient safety.
No PPB licence = No SBP = No operation.
This is one practical intervention counties can implement immediately.

You cannot stop an idea whose time has come simply because it threatens the comfort of the status quo.

There will be noise. There will be resistance. Numbers in the lower cadres will always be louder when standards and professional boundaries are being raised.

Healthcare cannot be organised around appeasing numbers. It must be organised around competence, accountability, patient safety and internationally recognised standards of practice.

The future of healthcare will not be negotiated with mediocrity. Those who cannot meet the standard will have to make way for those who can.

We’re so glad to see the respect and value of the Pharmacy profession slowly being restored. 💊 Recent queries have seen us explaining this debate to the global pharmacy community, and many struggle to understand why access to the Pharmacist is even contentious, particularly when neighbouring countries are already advanced in delivering this standard of care. Kenya should be leading in best practice.

We shall keep going, respectfully but firmly, until every Kenyan patient has access to the pharmaceutical care they constitutionally deserve. The patient must win. 🇰🇪

The Good Pharmacy Practice (GPP) Guidelines are ultimately about one thing: ensuring every Kenyan has access to quality pharmaceutical care. Not only in our cities. In rural Kenya. At the grassroots. Closer to the patient.

Pharmacists can support NCD management, medication management, screening, vaccination, minor ailments and preventive care within our Primary Care Networks.

That is why strengthening the presence of Pharmacists at lower levels of care matters.

GPP is not about restricting access. It is about raising the standard of care available to every Kenyan. Not simply access to medicines, access to the Pharmacist and proper pharmaceutical care.

Absolutely. Health security must start at the grassroots. Having pharmacists available closer to patients to support the growing burden of NCDs is a step in the right direction.

With strengthened pharmaceutical care at Level 3, pharmacists can now be part of the referral pathway from CHPs within Primary Care Networks, ensuring patients have access to medication expertise closer to where they live.

This is how we translate policy into better patient care. 💊🇰🇪

Secondly, Pharmaceutical Care is not a game of numbers to gamble with. Let's clarify and agree that highest attainable standard of health, esp pharmaceutical care is non negotiable for our Kenyan patients even in Rural areas. The numbers are adequate. We now have 9 universities of Pharmacy.

The law is clear: “registered” and “enrolled” are not interchangeable or equal. Justice Mwita affirmed that pharmacists are entered in a register, while pharm techs are entered in a roll; a deliberate legal distinction between the two cadres.
