The folly of coveting another nation's heritage: Cambodia misappropriated Thai glass-plate negatives officially registered under UNESCO's Memory of the World.
Miss Universe Cambodia's statement is essentially an admission forced by key evidence revealed by Thailand. Cropping historical Thai photographs and removing original watermarks demonstrates intentional theft and fraud, not an "unintentional" accident. Continuing to claim Thai traditional dress as Khmer legacy reveals a systematic attempt to falsify history and exploit Thai culture, infringing on intellectual property rights and degrading heritage under UNESCO's Memory of the World program.
The Thai government and Ministry of Culture must reject insincere apologies and take serious action. Thailand must make official diplomatic protests and vigorously pursue cross-border intellectual property cases against the organizers and any other parties involved. A passive approach will not stop this serial theft, which is supported by figures in the Hun Sen administration; the government must adopt an unwavering stance to defend national dignity and cultural assets.
