So many system design lessons you can take from GitHub’s latest outage.

Here’s what happened:

A traffic spike caused an Istio sidecar to hit its concurrency limit.

The autoscaling policy was watching the host service, but not the sidecar’s actual capacity.
So the system didn’t scale when it should have.

One failure cascaded into another.

Eventually, four HAProxy nodes exhausted their network flow limits and the gateway authentication path started failing.

And then came the worst nightmare of an distributed system architect:
Retries.

Instead of reducing load when the system was unhealthy, retry logic generated even more traffic.

Copilot Token Service traffic went from roughly 10K RPS to 100K RPS.

This is what a real distributed-system failure looks like. The reason they grill you on edge cases in interviews.

But GitHub is currently operating at an extreme scale it was never designed for bcz of AI. It’s worth giving them some grace here.
