Tension is brewing in Katsina State as Islamic clerics in Mani and Bindawa local government areas have openly opposed the emergence of Jamilu Abdu-Mani as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the 2027 House of Representatives election.

Mrs Abdu-Mani, who currently serves as Special Adviser to the governor on girl child education and child development, was selected as the party’s consensus candidate for the Mani/Bindawa federal constituency.

Her emergence followed a controversial process that saw earlier consensus pick Ahmad Saleh dropped after protests from other aspirants, including incumbent lawmaker Ahmad Yusuf.

The APC had adopted a consensus method for choosing candidates, with a high-powered committee led by former governor Aminu Masari and supported by regional coordinators Ibrahim Ida, Ibrahim Jukamshi, and Ahmad Dangiwa.

However, her candidacy has drawn sharp criticism from some clerics. Speaking during a teaching session at Lowcost Mosque, cleric Abu Abdullahi urged constituents to reject her, citing religious concerns. “As always, when there is an issue like this, we have a way of settling it. The Prophet, in an authentic Hadith, cautioned us against handing leadership affairs to women, It’s against our teachings,” he said.

Similarly, another cleric, Usman Salisu, called on local authorities and stakeholders to challenge the decision. “We are respectfully calling on the chairman of Bindawa local government and others to protest this, even if it will cost them their positions, because the Prophet said any society that appoints a woman as a leader is doomed,” he stated during a Jumu’at sermon.
